Cam installation

Hi all you camaro fans!

Is there anybody in the Indy surrounding area that has a cam installed in their new camaro...I have called several local speed shops and the highest so far was $10,000.00. The cheapest cost from the local GM dealer where I ordered the car from and it is $2200.00. I heard that people are saying it should not be over $800.00 anyone know of any places to get this done at a resonable price.

I have already bought the cam , valve springs and push rods just need them installed, with the car arrives in about 5 weeks.

Cam install should be not a dollar over 1K, whoever told you 10K needs to have their business license pulled!

I heard ya...the 1st shop I called gave me the phone number for the second one and these idots just kept trying to argure with me over the phone, at 1st they said they would need to pull the motor out of the car to replace the valve springs. I told them the motor does not need to be pulled out to put in the cam and valved springs. I told them to remove the heads and there would be room to put in the cam. The guy on the phone said that he was the expert ...and if I didn't need his advice or help why was I calling. At this point a couple more thousand dollars I would buy me an LS9 motor. I can put cams in the old school cars...but with the new high tech cars....not just anyone can work on them (not me) .

As far as the GM dealer goes...they said $90.00 an hour @ 22 hours...I asked the manager does include an hour break after every hour working... I just don't believe it will take 22 hours to put a cam and springs in. maybe 8 to 10

An experienced GM mechanic should be able to do a careful, clean job in about 15 solid hours, An LS1 expert should be able to do it in 8-10 solid hours

and the LS3 does not need to be removed, you'll have a ton of extra space if you do but it's unnecessary

I am pretty sure that the heads do not have to come off for a cam change.

my shop charges 65.00 per hour,

but we do so many cam installs we just do a flat rate of 400.00 (thats installing the cam and springs)

hell I could do the install, dyno tuning, and provide a custom grind cam, push rods, and springs for what you got install quotes for.

If you feel like a drive to Memphis, let me know.

we have a very good reputation over on LS1tech and we did a cam install on a camaro5 members car. do a search on Spectaclesolutions.

no they do not.

we use a neat little tool to put air into the cylinder and hold up the valves. Then we have another very nice little tool that allows us to change the springs on both valves in that cylinder at the same time.

Does the radiator have to be removed or tilted to slide the camshaft out?

Sorry BigFish but not true. They are done all the time with heads on engine. Motor stays in vehicle for cam swap as well. You do need to recover the refrigerant from HVAC system and then recharge after all is replaced along with the Dexcool in radiator. Radiator and condensor come out as well to provide room for cam removal. Oil change would be a good thing to do as well. Done in a day, easy!!
