These days, automatics have definitely caught up to manual transmissions for acceleration -- and automated manuals (especially dual clutch units) beat the tar out of both. Further, if you're not talking about racing on a track where it's SOP to beat the hell out of your transmission but instead are considering how long it takes you to get home from work, automatics have been faster for a long time now. Unless you're really great at double clutching you're going to beat your synchros to crap if you attempt to shift quickly, and no matter what starting from a stop takes longer unless you're willing to make the engine roar and burn up the clutch. In unabusive day-to-day driving you can jump out into traffic quickly with an automatic and not worry about clutch wear, and you can accelerate hard every time without any more transmission wear than if you accelerate moderately. OTOH, if you're trying to save some gas for most of your miles and want to hurry sometimes, you can drive a manual transmission MUCH more efficiently. It's also a lot more fun whether you're hurrying or not, cheaper, and requires less maintenance (unless you burn through clutches often). I will definitely be getting a manual transmission. I'm not racing, I'm just trying to enjoy the car, the road, and the drive (and do it efficiently).

Honestly, I think that's perfect. My Mustang came with 3.27 gears, and it was good enough, but I switched them out and put in 3.73 gears for more performance. I have no problems losing traction switching from 2nd to 3rd if I'm not careful....and that's with 315's on 10.5" wide back rims. 3.45 is an aggressive gear ratio that will also help a little when it comes to fuel economy.

Plus MT's are cheaper to replace than AT's
So driving that sucker hard and nuking it (hopefully wont happen) you wont be paying out the butt

Could the automatic be quicker due to the 1st/2nd/3rd gearing? The rear gear on the manual is a tad better than the auto. I wish my G8 had 3.27 rear gear.

theres a LOT of factors to be taken into account when comparing an A6 vs M6
gear ratios of the tranny, gear ratio of the rear, final drive ratio, the driver, launch rpm, shift points, speed of shifts (m6 only...haha), and also the nice little wheel hop problem that occurs. driving an auto, you will get less wheel hop due to the fact that the auto can take some of the initial shockload of launching, manual you drop it and go.... go bump bump bump...lol look at the 1st and 2nd gear ratios, hell look at all the ratios between the two, the a6 is stepped a lil higher across the board. granted the rear end ratio makes up a little on that and they come out about equal on the final drive ratio, but with the higher 3.27 rear, the auto will have a higher trap speed.

Congoman775 Are you serious? You seem to be saying that gear ratios do not effect acceleration.
Try a 1/4 mile run in the manual, but take off in 2nd gear (2.07). Then run it again taking off in 1st gear (3.01). Which one will yield a better time? With all things being equal, I would assume the run where you launched from first would be much better. |

anyone who's familiar with my posts here know that I'm not a mechanic, but even I know there are MANY different factors that go into comparing the rate of acceleration between an Auto V6 and a Manual V6

I thought he was asking, and I figured he didn't know much about gear ratios.

BMW has each paddle up and down shifting but I think its the opposite so downshift on push and upshift on pull, can't remember its been a while since I've driven an auto/SMG BMW.

I just took it as a "hey lets mess with the new guy" reply.
Either way, I would take either an automatic or the manual. My G8GT has AFM and I get 24mpg on the highway. So the new camaro will out accelerate my car and get nearly identical mileage. |

I saw the performance numbers, and the automatic is faster by .2 0-60
The manual performance number so far are unimpressive in my eyes. |
