Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but at least I use the forum search tool
![]() I have a 2012 vert with the Boston Acoustics stereo....this system absolutely sucks, I can't imagine how bad the coupes sound without the sub. Maybe I'm just spoiled with the Harmon Kardon and B&O systems in my Mercedes'. Question, I have the factory non-navigation radio head unit in my 2SS, is it possible for me to add an amp or two to the stock head unit and upgrade the speakers and sub or will I have to do an aftermarket head unit. I prefer the look, fit and finish of the stock unit. Has anyone done this? Thanks in advance.

I haven't upgraded the stereo yet, but I heard that there is an interference somewhere and either it makes the mids sound lighter, or there is a bit of white noise in the background. I'm sure there are kits that will remedy this, but I have not done the research yet.

6 1/2" in the doors
2" tweeters in A pillar (front window) 3 1/2" in the side panels in the backseat 8" or 10" subwoofer in center of backseat BA systems also have a front center speaker in the dash. I haven't put these in yet but get good reviews on the forum and elsewhere Inifinity Kappa Series 60.11CS - front door and tweeters 300M 3 1/2" speakers for backseat side panels. I have a non-ba system so will probably put in a new 10" subwoofer. I will probably replace the head unit and get a PAC kit to put it in. http://shopddmods-com.3dcartstores.c...aro_p_433.html Also, people that have the front center speaker with the BA system disconnect it as it supposedly makes the overall sound worse. If you search there are some posts about the PAC unit install and subwoofer/amp installations too. |

SUBWOOFER CLEARANCE?
While we're (sort of) on the topic, has anyone had clearance problems with a 10" subwoofer? I think I've read it needs to be a shallow version? I'm looking at a JL Audio Sub and the Mounting depth is 4-13/16".
I don't want to do any cutting. Will this fit?

I have a 2SS with the Infotainment system and yes the BA speakers suck. Wish it had Bose or Infinity speakers but only 245 watts total is lame with 9 speakers. The 10" sub in the back seat is useless. It can't be heard because their is no power going to it.
I checked with a high-end audio shop near me and you have to replace the entire system. The OEM replacement head unit is $1000 by it's self. Add speakers and labor for another thousand. When I am in this car, the top is down, and the radio is off. |

The BA Amp and speakers are easily gutted with a FARK wiring harness or even without if you want to simply splice the leads coming from the Head unit. Both are relatively easy for anyone with 12V experience. Quote:

There is nothing magical about a vert over a coupe regarding installation, the wiring is identical. The "rears" are located in the rear side panels instead of the back deck and it comes with a POS sub. Head units run $700-$1,000 today for the cheap ones, Alpine or other high end is north of $1,500. It's simply what it is, unit's are no longer $500 or less like they used to be 20 years ago unless you pick up some entry level JVC/Clarion/Sony. Dash kits are cheap at $300 for the Camaro, they run $1,500-$2,500 for most vehicles. DDMods offers Kenwood Navigation units with free dash kit (PAC) for under $1,000. There is really no other route to go through without spending more money on junk equipment. Including the mythical "mylink nav upgrade", complete waste of cash. While installation DIY is easy, one still needs extensive 12V experience and patience installing these kits as absolutely none of them are plug-n-play. More often than not, people nickel and dime themselves out of a $500 installation charge from a professional retail shop only to ruin the wiring in their car or have a 6 week nightmare in their garage with their camaro in pieces chasing a ground loop problem. One that they'll never find because they decided to use patch cable RCAs from a left over DVD player instead of purchasing shielded Stinger or JL audio patch cables for $100. Any reputable retail shop will charge $85+/hr for installation OR they will charge you MSRP for absolutely everything and offer "free installation". If they charge you per line iteme on the installation, do not be billed higher than these hourly rates; Head unit = 2hrs Front speakers = 1hr rear speakers = 1hr Basic sub (replacing OEM in vert) = 1hr Replacing all speaker wires = 2hrs with free quality 16 awg speaker wire Single 5 channel amp = 1hr single 4 channel amp + sub amp = 2hrs While I wrote THIS for the Z/28 crowd, the same basic principles apply here
