Looks like all the valves hit which would support my theory of the cam sprocket peg sheering off.

I would, after looking at the damage think that this is possible. But I also think it is possible that the lifter got loose and locked up the cam and in turn could have sheered off the cam sprocket peg also.

Sucks that this happened, but it is part of modding a car. Just come back and build it bigger than before...

Now that I see all the valves hit - yup, cam timing moved.

Probably a 1 bolt cam, and the pin is sheared off. After you take the front cover off, you'll probably be giving Comp Cams an earfull.

I was in Oshawa and caught wind of it Saturday... I didn't know who it was though. I really hate to read and see these pics.... I too have a cam and I worry about this same stuff. One thing I did notice with mine, is after getting to Canada and running 91 octane in my car, I strated hearing an obvious knock noise.... So obvious I raised my hood at the hotel and had a friend listen to it.... I stopped in NY on the way out of Canada and filled up on 93 and the knock has went away..... Either way.... I was just as worried myself after hearing that crap.

Mike, I've seen this sort of destruction before, horrific! When we raced sprint cars, I helpd dismantle our engines and reassemble. So sad.........:(

Brotha I have sat here long enough looking at these pics you are posting and can not bare to look anymore I think with that last batch you just drove the stake through my heart.

I'm glad you made it back home safe and the car made it also.

I honestly felt your pain when standing there in the plant parkinglot when I saw the look in your eye after I asked what happened.

Keep me posted.

I'm tearing it down at home and documenting all the findings here on a public forum so nobody can say I'm doing anything shady.

I did talk to Fbod & another GM rep at the tour....Scott helped, the other guy not so much.
All I can say is WOW seen racing motors that blew that looked way better than that. Carnage is a kind word for it.

So the valves all did in fact hit. Timing for sure. I'd hate for the tensioner to have been the problem. A simple little plastic peice causing all this damage.

The front cover coming off will finish the puzzle. BUT, we all know the chain of events, but they go in a circle too. We may never know where the initial failure was. The bolt could have sheered AFTER the failure from the solid lockup. Tensioner could have failed afterward too.

Be interesting to see the front.
