Reading between the lines.... G8 = new impala? Makes complete sense. Sorry, I just really don't think the impala looks good... at all.

I read the news and what I can't figure out is, are they getting rid of it as a whole in the next year, or are they just discontinuing certain models? I thought the new g8 was supposed to be their new golden egg?

They are 100% gone. Time to make the G8 the new impala especially since they were adding the V6 to the G8 this year.

nope.
now its supposed to be GONE.
prolly by the end of 2010 or sooner.
and then they said that they WERENT gonna carry over/rebadge the G8, which is insane. expect that to change ... the same way this WHOLE pontiac story has mutated in the media this year.

my buds and i had INTENSE talks about this on saturday night while hangin' outside (it was summer here in south NJ)... and we agree with the obvious / already stated idea:

put the G8 back as a CHEVY impala. RWD super-sedan... V6 options, of course.... for the old bitties that buy up IMPALA like crazy,
then finally a V8 SS - like the G8 GT or GXP.

anyway, it sucks but its interesting nonetheless to see how the shape of the industry/GM is changing. i support them no matter what. even though this Obama administration seesm to be running the show - i still favor GM design and american muscle heritage.

GM will cut its North American nameplate lineup from 48 down to 36 by 2012. Hummer (H2, H3), Saab (9-3, 9-5, 9-7x), and Saturn (Astra, Aura, Vue, Outlook, Sky) account for 10 of those 12 cuts. The 2011 Chevy Volt is an added model, offsetting elimination of the TrailBlazer. Cruze for Cobalt is a wash. The lame-duck GMC Envoy makes 11, and the Pontiac G5 probably makes 12. The G6 sedan is likely dead, though the coupe and convertible versions do qualify as niche vehicles. The Buick Lucerne, Cadillac DTS, and STS all are likely to go away for a couple years until they're replaced with a new full-size Buick and a converged DTS/STS.

The problem with the G8 is out of the 25000 Holden has sent to the USA this year not even half has sold. That was on CNN last night and the G8 was what Pontiac was hoping to be its spotlight product.
