Cannot believe this much time has passed - I remember it as clearly as yesterday. We live on the West coast in Seattle, WA - it is a 3-hour time difference and we do not typically listen to radio or watch TV in the morning while getting ready for work. The call came from my mom and sister, who were in London on vacation, to ask if the US TV stations had any more information than they were getting in the UK. I said "I have no idea what you are talking about" and immediately turned on the TV. It happened to be just after 7am locally, literally just a few seconds after the first tower collapsed, and shortly after I was talking on phone live with my Sister as the second tower collapsed. Never been more horrified in my life. My wife grew up in NY and knew several people that worked in the towers. Took days to sort out who we lost (1 friend did not make it out).

God Bless America and appreciation for all those that give service to the country.

I was outside of my shop, looking at the empty skies (all planes were grounded). It seemed like there was dead silence all around. Even automobile traffic seemed reduced. I then heard a single plane in the air. It was Air Force One flying over my building to land at Offutt Air Force base, to deliver Bush to the bunker there. It was very weird, and unforgettable.

wanted to post yesterday but couldn't get the site to come up, but I digress....

I think this thread is a great way to honor the sacrifice both at ground zero and overseas by our military. can't help but think of the many friends that I have lost both at the WTC and during the war. spent much of the day reflecting on it and reading the tread when I had a chance.

on 9-11-2001 I was working the grave yard shift for Gateway as a TSP and got home around 4 am. Usually woke up around 8 used the bath room and jumped back in bed but that morning I happened to pass the big screen in our living room when the image of the WTC tower with a spot or indentation in the side. the newscast I think had just gone to the network feed and they were speculating that possibly a small plane had run in to it. obviously not the usual news story so I thought I would watch for a couple minutes, well it turned in to alot more than a couple minutes and I never got the rest of my sleep that day. saw the second plane hit the other tower live. My first reaction was maybe this was a scene from a movie but that was dashed pretty quick. replaced with shock and hours of channel surfing to get as much info as possible.

Anyone that witnessed that day in one capacity of another will never for get it, it changed us in many ways.

I remember going to work the next night and it was nothing like the night before, no one calling, was like a fraction of the usual activity, usually we work with west coast customers but that night I don't think most people really had the minds on anything other than what was happening in NYC. strange a surreal day and time. will never for get it. in some ways it was my generations pearl harbor.

God bless America and the families directly effected that day!

We were installing a gas line to a house on a fairly busy route and we had to close one lane of traffic down to dig the road due to it being rocky. When we saw the people driving by we saw people crying and actually a couple of us just about got hit. So a guy comes out of his house and says well I guess this country will never be the same and we were like what happened and he told us and just about that time we got a call and were told for all the crews to get off the roads and while we put plates on the road one guy started listening to the radio and we all know the rest and feel terrible for the people who lost loved ones or friends and still pissed that we were that vulnerable.

I was back at work in CA after having just come back from a business trip to NY the day before. Couldn't believe it..

2 days before that (on 9/9) I did a little sightseeing and one place i went was the observation deck of the tower. I still have the ticket put away.

My son who is 3 asked why the neighbors flag was flying so low yesterday evening. That was a tough one to explain. My wife and I left it as it is a special day.

I guess now I can tell my story.

I can't remember why, but for some reason I was going to school late that day. I remember sitting in my room playing with some toys and my mom called me into her room. I then remember watching the 2nd plane hit and the 1st tower collapse. My mom decided to keep me home that day and to take me with her to her doctors appointment. The doctors office was right next to Tampa International Airport. One thing I'll always remember is hearing the constant sound of planes landing.

wow, my experience was so different

I was at School at the time in Serbia (Eastern Europe). Someone run into the class and told us that USA is under attack and that the Twin Towers are down. We turned on the TV and sure enough, it was all over the news.

The more intelligent half of the the class sat there in silence while the other half was celebrating outside (USA led bombing campaign on Serbia in 1999), burning American flags etc. You know, the works. They saw it as "what goes around comes around" kinda thing.

Eventually they did realize it's innocent civilians who suffered so they dropped the bullshit act eventually.

I was driving to a business meeting listening to the radio when I heard about it. I tried calling one of the guys I worked with who was already at the location I was going to. Phones were jammed. I got him via Nextel. He said he was watching it on the news. I asked him which building was hit. At that point only one had been. He told me it was the north tower 1 WTC, where my brother-in-law was in his office on the 103rd floor at Cantor Fitzgerald. I hung up tried frantically to call my wife and couldn't finally reached from a pay phone she answered the phone sobbing asking me to come home. I was already on my way. It took me almost an hour to get home. As I pulled into my driveway the 1 WTC was coming down. We packed our son up and went immediately to my wife's sister's home for the next few days hoping to hear any news that never came. I witnessed the greatest displays of human kindness and generosity those next few weeks as people came to support my sister-in-law and her children 13 and 17 at the time.
It changed all of our lives.
We will NEVER Forget.
RIP - Joseph Barry Vilardo

I was in bed still, I got my son up for school & then went back to bed. My brother in law came to my bedroom door & told me to turn on the tv. We did just as the first tower came down.

Every time my phone rang I jumped. since he was military. our 1995 Camaro went in to the shop that day. for a new hood & paint job
