I would seriously consider ripping the whole OnStar circuit out of the car now. Module, mirror, everything but the antenna since the XM comes through there.

When you cancel service they should completely close the connection between the satellite and your car, immediately, the moment you call them to cancel. And send you an email confirmation that it was in fact completed.

This may drive me to never buy car with OnStar again.

They can't send it to your insurance without your permission.

I, personally, am not overly concerned about this.

ah the way I read it if you wanted everything suspended you just had to ask, if you just cancel the channel is still open so you can restore your service easily but if you don't want them you only have to let them know. No need to start ripping your car appart

Maybe because some of us have a better understanding of the technology than older people.... More times than not "tracking" data like this is used for purposes other than intended or publicized. If they track while I subscribe to the service, then fine. They have 0 right to it after I cancel. There are simply too many reasons to even go in to on why this is not a good idea and practices like it should be stopped.

Insurance companies will use this data (along with all the other data they collect) to accurately rate customers in different areas.
How do you know? Do you work for Onstar? Did you design their system? From what I know about databases, I'm willing to bet that everything is associated with the VIN of the vehicle, and it would be no problem for your insurance to submit your VIN, and Onstar to query their data and return a report with everything associated with your VIN.

LOL, in case you missed it, unless you call Onstar and tell them to kill the connection, they have your permission. That's the whole point of the letter.

I posted this in another thread, but its relevant here too:

I love how everybody always defends Onstar on here and think that those that have a problem with it are tin foil hat nutjobs. I don't want to hear any of you complain when your warranty is denied because Onstar noticed you accidentally overreved your engine, or you insurance goes up because you drove 1000 miles more than you said you would, or you have to pay a road tax because you drove x amount of miles on your local roads, etc.

The problem you all don't understand is that its a slippery slope, and the further the sled goes down the slope, the more momentum it builds up and the more difficult to stop. Sure, maybe right now they aren't going to give your information to the cops for an automatic speeding ticket because they know your car did 90 in a 65, however, give it a few years as they keep sharing more and more info. They'll keep sending out new privacy notices as you get used to it little by little, by the time you wake up, its too late.

--- As a technical person.. The vast majority of the Tin Foiler commenters would probably be very surprised on the stuff I could recover/track on them with access to things like their car's computer, their home computer, their mobile devices, etc.. for "tracking" purposes only, of course...

Mine's been cancelled, but I called them up to validate... The lady on the other phone assured me it's fully deactivated and that they don't track their customers. She seemed a little irritated when I go to her.. Maybe others calling up and giving them a hard time..

Can someone confirm that people that have previously turned off their service aren't included in this? She said it doesn't go in to effect until December.

The statement that individual info would not be given out is the same line that the state of NJ said about their electronic toll road pass that kept your info around. It was strictly private and used for traffic flow/control/design/etc.....I read a year or so ago about a divorce in NJ where the information related to the mans car from the tollroad electronic pass was requested and allowed to be used in court. So private isn't necessarily private. It is not that I condone cheating on ones partner, but you see where this led to and what onstar's info may well lead to.
