The SS is friggin awsome, but I love the 'little' LLT =)

trust me guys, I am not saying "you should have got a V8"... I am saying if you are going to put upwards of 3-5 grand in a car that is only about 5 grand less than a 1SS... its seems like a no brainer but I know everyone has their reasons and I am not trying to preach a "holier than thou" attitude because I have an SS. I love ALL Camaros LS... all the way to the soon to be (maybe) Z28... I guess I just don't understand the logic behind buying a upper 20s car, sticking 5 grand in it to get to over 300whp when you can buy one with about 60 more than that for the same price... but whomever said the comment about the mods costing the same... they are 100% correct, we are never happy with "stock".

Keep modifying V6ers... I want to know what the max you can squeek out of these pups, N/A.

very true... i never checked the v6 rates. my comparison was apples to oranges.

Well, you could also factor in the daily drivability factor. Even if you boost this v6, it's still a pretty good daily driver. I'm not speaking from experience, but it doesn't seem like a boosted SS with 500-600+hp to be very driver friendly as a daily driver. I could be wrong.

Hey jrhaus76,
Why buy a 2010 SS when for $20,000 more you could buy a Vette or for the same price a vintage 1980's souped up Camaro.....and if you're rich why not a Ferrari or McLaren... why??? Because its a challenge....the underdog....get more from less. My V6 Camaro is the fastest car I have owned in my 53 years and over 10 cars owned...many others test driven. If I can beat a V8 from any make or model.....that says a lot for the GM V6. Why spend more for a V8....its factory speed....maybe too much. I'll make my V6 sing and say....yeah....look at me....look out....I did it.....I'm alive! Yeah...like size matters....only if you're small minded!

How do these relationships work, anyway? That is, hp to rwhp, torque at the flywheel to torque at the wheels? I have an Airaid CAI (+15hp, +16 tq. according to Jannetty) on order, and although I know the results var from car to car, is there a conversion available to estimate what I'd get at the wheels from that?

Horsepower at the flywheel compared to the wheels. Drive train loss. 312 HP at the flywheel, 245-250 at the wheels for an automatic.
I would rely more by what others have gotten from their dyno readings from the mods that have been performed. What Jannety did was the best way of doing it, same car, same day by people who know what they are doing. Better results. However I still am not certain which one I will get.

Thanks! We got it June 1989! I like it but it rarely gets driven now that I have the 2010. Has about 87,000 miles on it. Pretty much bone stock. Had to have the tranny rebuilt last year but other then that its been a great car.

True... I have driven some cammed V8s and though you could daily them, it would be a bit taxing after time...

OK... now you going a bit far. Give it a rest. and for your comments about other cars... #1 I sold a 2007 Corvette to get the Camaro b/c I like the Camaro better. #2 I have a 1967 Camaro and 1989 IROC so I got the "vintage" covered. They are not souped up because a stock car thats 20 or 40 years old is much cooler than a crazy modified one... plus too dangerous. I will keep the newer cars for the speed. #3 Did you just compare a V6...or V8 for that matter Camaro to a Ferrari? IF I could afford a Ferrari, I would have that instead BUT I CANT.

We are talking dollar for dollar here. I paid $33,000 for my 2SS/RS a year ago... got GMS when a lot of suckers were paying market adjusted prices ... How much is a V6? $26-$30 grand depending... Now go add $5000 for headers, exhaust, CAI, cam, ported heads, tune, pulley... and MABE get 300 rwhp for the same money I got 360 rwhp out of the box. Its a matter of being smart with your money.

As for the challenge... thats fine... I agree with that but it isnt smart moneywise but to each their own I guess.

I will reiterate, I am NOT slamming anyone for buying a V6.... just looking at the other side of logic behind it.

Usually a good rule of thumb is a 15-20% loss through the drivetrain.

Stock V6 312 crank HP * 80-(85%) = 250-(265) whp.

Same for the V8s

Stock 426 crank HP * 80-(85%) = 340 -(362) whp

Looks like from real world dyno results, the V6 is hovering around the 20% loss while the V8 is around the 15% but there is variance. This will hold true for most rear drive vehicles.

I didn't buy the v8, because I want to wait till 2015 for the lighter Camaro, I didn't want to pay for premium gas with worse gas mileage, and insurance is twice as much as the v6 for a v8 model.

I am not trying to make my car a v8 beater, I just like making any car go as fast as possible NA. If I had gotten the v8, I woulda done the same exact mods for that car because if the mods are out there, why not install them

A lot of ppl bought the V6 for various reasons. I for one just wanted to enjoy the car while waiting for the Z28 to hit the market. Why pay extra for the V8 now and then extra again for the Z? Enjoy the V6 for less and upgrade to what i want when they hit the market. The extra cost of the SS adding in the fuel cost and the insurance premiums i save over the amount of price difference that is predicted to be between the SS and the Z28. I put that money aside, usually, and will have it to use as down payment so i will not finance an outrageous amount for it.

As for "why build a V6 to go faster?" I just like making each and every car i own unique to me. Whether it is engine mods or cosmetic it is unique for me and i enjoy doing it. $5000 for mods is way more than i will spend because im not keeping this car. But, for someone who plans on keeping it will be an investment for them to enjoy. Nothing like suprising people who are confident they can outrun a V6 Camaro.

You bought the V8 cause thats what you wanted. Good for you and everyone else who did. They are awesome. Just not for everyone.
