Motortrend is only about as reliable as the onion when it comes to facts.

I hope not. That would really stink if it got close to 'Vette pricing, because they are two different cars for two different types of people, IMVO. Then again, what many of us have speculated it to be is not what it used to be, according to history...

I think that there's going to be enough demand for the Z/28, that GM will supply. You can almost guarentee a Z/28

So....let's ponder a moment....maybe a 10,000 unit Z28 build???? And maybe a 1000 car Black Edition, with a mystery motor?

I'll be honest - I'm a little excited about the black edition. It just SCREAMS BAD to me.

But the cost of either will wake me up, I'm sure.

the z28 IMO will come out....especially since chryslers viability plan showed a new srt8 engine for 2011....meaning the 6.4 with 475-500hp will be coming with the mds for the challenger....chevy wont challenge this.

Seems I've missed a doozie of a thread.

So, lets re-read the actual article first shall we? I'll highlight some important bits that haven't seen much discussion (I took out a bit of excess too)

Now, though, there's another thread running through GM's product planning process: not, should we build this vehicle, but is this a vehicle we should be seen to be building?
The Camaro Z/28 is one of those vehicles.
Sources inside GM say the new Z/28 is basically done. The image you see on these pages is very close to the final signed-off design, based on photos of a scale clay model we've seen. Key details to note are the deeper front bumper fascia, with larger front aperture under the grille and the spotlights mounted in deep vents on either side. The Z/28 also gets a different grille mesh compared with the standard Camaro's.
At the rear is a taller lip spoiler that runs the full width of the car. A new rear-bumper fascia features a deeper section with integrated exhaust outlets. The wheels are 20-inchers with an aggressive "tuning-fork" five-spoke pattern.

. . .

"In the current environment, it would be very difficult to get any traction on a large rear-drive program," says one insider. But a hard core of performance enthusiasts inside GM are hopeful they can get the Z/28 back on track. "If we leave it too long, the car will become irrelevant," frets one source. One idea reportedly under study calls for a strictly limited production run, with each car individually numbered, to attract collectors and enthusiasts, and priced to ensure a solid profit margin.
According to sources, GM product chief Bob Lutz has said that, while he would love to do the car, "We need to make the world right first." However, that could take cash-crunched GM a long, long time.
So, what did they actually say?

  • GM's designed a superchaged Camaro
  • Many (both inside GM and out) would like to build it
  • Reality dictates that this is not a good time to launch such a car
  • Chances are, it might possibly happen in the not to distant future, but if its too far away it likely won't happen at all.

Basically, the same thing we've heard and have been repeating for months. Only this time, Motor Trend added a nifty picture and claim that they've seen a mockup. Based on the timing of the article, I'd guess its a filler article for what would have been a 'first drive' review

Doesn't say that at all. It just quotes a motortrend article. They are famous for being 100% wrong 90% of the time and publishing sensationalistic nonsense to sell more magazines. It is coming back when GM says it is, until then it is just another pointless rumor.

well, if they could do 20,000 it might be able to keep the pricing down. but do a modified setup so that it has the interior options of a 1LT with better performance and a higher tier for interior options at a higher price.

Here's how I see a meeting between Ed Peper and John Fitzpatrick go down regarding the return of the Z:

John: Ed, we've completed the final plans of the Z/28 and would like it to go into production.

Ed: Hey that's great! How many do you project we'll sell?

John: Well....in this current economy we'll probably sell 10,000 units.

Ed: No

John: No what?

Ed: No go. Unless you come to me and tell me you have a specialty product that will sell at least 25,000 units, we are going to use those resources on developing fuel efficient cars.
