You mean like lowering it and bottoming out....or supercharging, adding Nitrous, turbocharging, adding a Cam, getting a tune, etc......which could all cause damage far beyond a fuel pump.

+1 the fuel is used to cool the fuel pump . Its a good way to prematurely burn out the pump . Had it happen on a 2003 Grand Am gt. Cost me $700 to fix . Learned my lesson .

For absolutely no apparent reason...

I'm pretty sure this isn't good for the fuel pump.

↑↑↑ I'm pretty sure that has been mentioned at least once in this thread, and I haven't read all of it either.
I once ran the miles-to-empty display on a different car all the way down to where it showed three bars instead of numbers. The light comes on at 50 to E. Car never even sputtered from fuel sloshing away from suction, took 18.235 gallons into an 18.5 gallon tank after a very good previous fill, so there was all of a quart left. That's the closest to a Jackson Browne moment I've ever been, and I hope closer than I ever get again. Norm

I do not know about running out, but we ran both our 03 Tahoe and 01 WS6 until the light was on and past many, many times.. We had both vehicles over 10 years and well over 200K miles. not one single fuel pump related issue. Relax in the low fuel level hurting the pump. From experience, that is not the case.
