Hah, I have the CAD data for the hockey stripes, ground effects, air dam, both spoilers, and more. I'll post some pics this week. And no you can't have the data! Actually it's not any kind of secret, probably a hundred people can access it.

I can access a whole lot of sensitive cad files where I work, but if I posted even just pictures of them, I'd be fired seconds after anyone found out, and we just make signs. (In fact all GM dealer signs). Just because you can access them, are you sure that you should access them? I just hope you don't get into trouble for that. That said, this is pretty cool!

Yeah I can access that info! In fact all the Camaro data, and so can a LOT more than a hundred people. All GM data is definitely secret though; you shouldn't post any more. Don't you think if it was OK someone else would have done it in the past couple years?

I woudn't have posted it 6 months ago. Today, it hardly matters. All the tooling and fixtures have been built for months. Nothing particularly remarkable about a 1 piece body side either, it's been SOP since the Ford Taurus.

Are you the cad designer of these drawings?

I can answer that for him! No. Plus there is no one designer or sculptor that does the production sheetmetal. Each of the dozens of surfaces you see in those parts has been lovingly massaged by quite a few people over several years and I guarantee that nobody inside GM would post something like that. He probably works for a supplier or aftermarket company judging by the other stuff he said he could post.

One part of me says to respect GM's property and not to post any more "sensitive data". But, the other part of me wants to see more more more!!!
So conflicted...

Okay everybody chill, I'm just jerking a few chains around here. Seeing as how the entire BIW is already going down the line and someone inside the plant posted it, a picture of an obsolete file is hardly risque. My point would be that the idea of this information being locked down in a secret vault is not realistic. Hell, when I ran a CNC machine at a tool shop, every CAD file for every part, new and old was accessible to anyone in the shop. We could have walked off with it at any time. Back then, what could you really do with it? The scary thing today is that anyone in Australia could steal this data from Holden, send it to Taiwan and have parts off hard tooling in a few weeks. I won't be doing that.

Looks like CadKey to me. Am I right?
And just out of couriosity, why did you suddenly move to Antarctica and start driving an old Edsel? And out of further couriosity, where did you find a '39 Edsel? Let's see a picture of that. If my memory serves me well (and it doesn't most of the time), yesterday you were in Detroit driving a 68 (or 69?) camaro?

Elie confirmed the 1 piece stamping , it's good to see it but I don't think any competitor is going to be shocked... Impressed they could stamp that deep, yes. Also explains why no T-top. I'm also guessing the convert is going to be heavy unless they design a ROLL-BAR into the chassis.(please)

Just a bit of info for you Camaro nuts !!
Those pics that were posted by one of my colleages here at GM in Oshawa, got himself fired !! That really sucks, because I didn't think that the pictures revealed any "unknown" info. But rules are rules. The story is that he took the pictures, but it was his son that posted them. Hopefully our Union will work something out for him, because he had almost 30years service, and I don't feel the punishment fits the crime. As far as the Camaro, I obviously wont post any pictures, nor will I divulge any critical information. What I will say about this car is that it will be worth the wait!! I'm a Mopar guy, but GM did their homework on this one. I've drag raced over the years, as well as built many cars, and this car is "beefy" ! It should handle 600+ HP. Some of the components look like they belong on a 1-ton truck. One of the posters mentioned that the plant will be making saleable cars by Feb 09, and I think that's about right. Many cars will be built beforehand, but will be prototypes that will be used as yard cars or as crash test cars. I will be very interested in the final weight of it, because like I said, everything seems overkill. I thought GM was building the wrong car at the wrong time, but I may eat my words on that if they put a fuel efficient engine in for the customers that may want that. There must be a good reason that GM picked our assembly plant to build this car!! I guess being the best North American plant helped !! |
