That was when I had cranked it over so the oil pump could center itself on the crank before tightening the bolts down.

Yeah, once I though about it, the crank and cam don't turn over 1:1 so 6oclock doesn't always match 12 o clock. I guess 12 and 6 is just easy to read so that's why ppl use it when installing.

This is from the diy thread. does it mean that it has to be at one of these positions if the crank is at 12? (12 or 6)

- Cylinder 1: camshaft dot at 12:00 o'clock/crankshaft dot at 12:00 o'clock
- Cylinder 8: camshaft dot at 1:30 o'clock/crankshaft dot at 3:00 o'clock
- Cylinder 7: camshaft dot at 3:00 o'clock/crankshaft dot at 6:00 o'clock
- Cylinder 2: camshaft dot at 4:30 o'clock/crankshaft dot at 9:00 o'clock
- Cylinder 6: camshaft dot at 6:00 o'clock/crankshaft dot at 12:00 o'clock
- Cylinder 5: camshaft dot at 7:30 o'clock/crankshaft dot at 3:00 o'clock
- Cylinder 4: camshaft dot at 9:00 o'clock/crankshaft dot at 6:00 o'clock
- Cylinder 3: camshaft dot at 10:30 o'clock/crankshaft dot at 9:00 o'clock

No! The crank rotates 2:1 compared to the cam. Those figures are for putting the pistons at top dead center.

- Cylinder 3: camshaft dot at 10:30 o'clock/crankshaft dot at 9:00 o'clock
And this is where I was telling everyone dont put the oil pump on yet. When I was on this step I had noticed the camshaft dot at 1030 (after cranking it over when I "thought" the cam was at 6 and the crank at 12 earlier in the step, it may of shifted a couple of teeth) so I had assumed since I couldnt see the crankshaft dot that it was at 9:00. But thats alright, lessoned learned and here I am sharing that.

How did you pick out pushrods before measuring? Always measure for pushrods IMO.

Best of luck. Definitely replace that piston. I could get the guides checked in the heads because a bent valve will trash the guide too.

We supply a certain length with our cam install kits, but tell the customer to measure for correct length and we exchange them for free if you need to go up or down in sizing.

Here at the shop for in-house builds I stock several lengths and every car gets measured every time, it doesn't matter if we do two of the exact same builds back to back.

Which is exactly how it should be. Just didn't see him measuring at all.

If one does not know how to properly measure for pushrod length or has not had experience doing so it could be just as bad as not measuring

The issue doesn't present itself as a pushrod length error seeing that all the damage was done on the exhaust side. Unless in conjunction with the wrong timing, but that can't be determined now until is ripped apart. Yes, the length should always be checked, but I don't think that is the issue in this case. If timing were correct and it was an error with the push rods, then the intake side would have damage too. It's not like different lengthed push rods are being used between exhaust and intake. Just my .02 I'm positive the answer Is hiding behind the timing cover.
