Direct injection negates the need for premium in the LLT V6, comparing it to a Nissan without DI is pointless.

I have been getting a range of 21 to 24 mpg over the last handful of fill ups with about 75% hwy driving and 2000 to 2300 rpm with hwy speed 65 to 70. It looks like if I go conservative and keep it in D rather than S it keeps the shift to lower rpm's (under 2000 rpm's and 5th or 6th gear) and thus better mileage, esp if I can keep my foot off the hard accelerations. This is in Charlotte at around 500 feet elevation and just clicked past 3000 miles on the odo...no mods yet.

Mileage

I still have under 1500 miles but have gotten no less than 18 mpg with my foot in it mostly always and up to 21.5 with some highway driving.

LT1 RS inferno orange manual transmission.

Love my car!

2LT RS manual

About 1100 miles currently on the car.

On one trip (45 minutes, 90% city, 10% highway) with little traffic and passive driving (shifting at low rpm), I got close to 27 mpg both ways.

On my daily drive (less than 10 minutes) to work, 100% city, I only get 17 mpg if I drive passively (average speed is 20 mph).

My manual calculations of mileage has shown that the onboard DIC calculation of fuel mileage is accurate to within 3-5% (for the 4 times that I have compared the #s). So the onboard computer gives an excellent calculation.

FWIW, I have a 2lt auto. I took a 1,000 mile highway road trip this past week and I was amazed... in the beginning I filled up w/ the 10% ethanol fuel that is sold here in TX, and I got 24.5 mpg highway @ 74mph average. When I used the 100% fuel (bought in OK) I got 29.6 mpg at the same speed! I am convinced that it's the fuel that makes the difference!!! On the ethanol blend I was getting @ 22.5 mpg in a mixed highway/city drive. (50/50%)

Too bad we don't get pure fuel in my area now, I'd like to see what it'd do to my mixed driving...

Ethanol provides less energy per gallon, so you get lesser gas mileage burning blended fuel than you do burning pure petrol.

I'm surprised by the somewhat low numbers in this thread . . .

I rented a 1LT automatic from Avis for a one-day test drive . . . overall average (filled the tank and did the math) I got 25.9 MPG; on a "simulated commute" with mostly highway and some off-highway cruise I got 30.5 according to the computer; in heavy stop and go I got about 18 (left the car idling for long time while I aired up the tires and that nocked it down a bit)

I was not driving super agressively, but not super easy either . . . it was a "test drive" so I did get on it a bit when I had a chance; but those chances were limited by traffic.

Does the automatic really get that much better mileage than the manual?

Have the same deal here in Florida with the fuel @10% .... I did take a trip a couple weeks back, and averaged 27 mpg running around 80 on the interstate ....

I have to disagree. To maximize the full potential of the high compression, Ide have to say that high octane with a tune would have to make better numbers in performance and mpg.

High octane fuel is used for one purpose and one purpose only: prevent pre-ignition. The cooling effect of DI also accomplishes this goal. Higher octane fuel would only help if you were to change the compression pressures in the cylinder (more pressure = more heat).

As it is, the engine already gets the full potential of its high comression (better fuel economy and more power). I doubt a tune would be enough to force the requirement of premium. To do that you'd need either a much higher CR or moderate boost levels.

AFAIK, it's not just the cooling effect, but the fact that the fuel doesn't need to be there until you're ready to ignite it anyway.
