Some sites also have a "rep" system. That could be cool.
we've discussed that too. but that is still a fallable system. people like PQ would get 30k points because damn near everyone knows them. but, no offense to PQ, not sure he'd be the person I go to for an advanced technical question...

in fact, I know he wouldn't be the person I go to... because normally, he comes to me with questions

Hhaha I saw.

And that makes you a nerd.
I may be a nerd, but I'm a nerd that can whoop your* ass!

There really isn't a perfect system...or even a "good" system. In my experience, I only really go to dudes online that I kind of halfway know for car advice. I can understand that newcomers might come here looking for advice, but at the point you're essentially taking critical engine advice from "some guy on the internet".

Take my GF's 2001 Escape, for example. I know jack sh*t about those things, but her EGR valve kept exploding, so I looked around online. I combined my own basic car knowledge with a few similar reports and fixes I saw in forums. Bam, clogged cat. Fixed.

I guess my point is that if you hear a weird engine sound, then go to a stranger on the internet for advice, you kinda deserve what's coming

I've heard of sites that charge to be able to give and receive rep. Like a small monthly charge, or you can pay up to a year in advance.

Same here. I'm not paying to be able to be on an online forum.

You don't have to pay anything, but then you can't give rep. It's an option.

PQ got a cam install after going to the internet with a weird engine sound.

dont get me wrong, the internet can be a great tool and there are plenty of people who know what they are talking about. but there are also people that dont know their ass from a hole in the ground but they can type eloquently enough that they come off as knowing what they are talking about.
