Does this theory apply to Road Racing as well. I have found some smaller Diameter Z06 Replica Wheels to replace my 20's when I'm on the track. However they come with a "not for competition" disclaimer. What is the weekest link? Grip of the tire, Wheel or Lug Nuts (Camaro has the Heavy Duty Lugs)? Appreciate any assistance. Thanks |

LC, that wheel has two air valve holes. The rubber one seen is just to plug the hole, as it isn't needed. I really hate when companies drill that backside hole in the inner hoop, it is a worthless position 99% of the time. Most wide fitments on any vehicle will collide with suspension parts if something sticks out back there.
Camaricopa, I would never ever use cheap knock-off cast wheels for the rigors of road racing. I've seen the spokes crack and separate from the hoop on too many of those. Also, keep in mind that any Corvette wheels were designed to work with a 3200 lb 2-seater car, not a 3850 lb tank of a vehicle like the Camaro. Going too cheap on wheels can leave you with expensive consequences. Pay extra for safety and quality. You will never find forged wheels that crack and break like these cast wheels can. When they crack, results are often catastrophic. Tony

I'm not 100% certain on the hoop forming process, but my bet is that they are indeed all flow-formed. The giveaway is the series of lines on the outer surface. Some may be press-formed too. I'll dig into this a bit more.

Tony,
Just to help you out here a bit. When it come to the 3 piece wheels there are 2 different forging processes; rotary forging and conventional (Hydraulic) forging. The 2 different forgings have their own positive and negative effects as well. Barrels are not made from conventional forging but rather rotary forging. It's a pretty neat process that allows for the wheel/barrels to be just as strong as the center disk. I will see if I can talk to some of my guys so I can get you guys some images. |

Tony:
Great information here - everybody should read this. I just ordered Vossen 3-piece forged, yes they are pricey but I was more interested in quality and safety (especially after seeing those pictures a few posts ago). Glad you gave a favorable response. Do I need to get the gorilla locks? Riddle me this.. What is "concaved"? Sorry, not up on my wheels (other than love to look at them).. Thankx a bunch. Lori |

Lori,
I could have saved you a bundle on those wheels. Probably a grand or more. Doh! Gorilla locks are excellent. Size is 14mm x 1.5 conical seat. Concave face is the latest trend at making the outer face of the wheel bowl-shaped, with the spoke tips sticking out further than the center. These are the most expensive forgings, and also the heaviest. Examples: Flat Forging Convex Forging aka "Deep Lip, Extreme Lip, etc.." Concave Forging
