This is simply for music playback. You can't watch movies, look at photos, edit pdf's, create powerpoints, or do your homework with your car. Sorry.

I have a 16 gigabyte drive which can hold a staggering 4000 songs.

Thank's y'all answered my question!
Yes, you can play songs MP3s from thumbdrives plugged into the USB.

IPOD Clarification Needed:

1) An IPOD could be played 2 ways- thru the stereo mini-jack or the USB port (Both jacks located next to each other)??

2) If #1 is correct- IPOD song control thru the mini-jack must be done on the IPOD?? And the display on the car stereo would only show "Aux Input" [Or something like that]??

3) If #1 is correct- IPOD song control (Via the cable you get with the IPOD when you bought it-that's hooked up to your computer for song transfers/etc) can be done on the car stereo, and you get the song info on it's display??

If you hook-up an iPod using the mini-jack, you have to control the songs from the iPod. If you use the USB, then you can control the iPod through the radio controls (including the steering wheel audio controls). I believe they refer to this as PDIM (Personal Device Interface Module). See this thread for some details - http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8292.

Last night I bought a 32 GB USB Flash Drive on Ebay ($65) to use in the Camaro so as to not have to lug around the IPOD. Great function. But, of course, a question:

1) Can the car's stereo distinguish between playlists on the Flash drive? I don't want to have to filter thru country/comedy, etc while listening to Rock N Roll. Does it detect this thru the song's ID-3 tag?

Kinda might impact on how I set up the songs on the flash drive.

And, if I'm not mistaken, the car stereo won't play "AAC" files, which are IPOD exclusive? I converted all music files that were AAC to mp3's within the IPOD software- quite easy.

But there are some songs bought thru ITunes that can NOT be converted. I bought the wife- David Cook's CD for Xmas [For her-NOT ME] and the IPOD software would not allow it to be converted to mp3 format. But it did allow me to convert songs from Triumph [Older Rock n Roll] from AAC to mp3.

Most songs these days on the iTunes store are not protected. But, ones that are protected will not work on anything other than iTunes on the computer you bought it from or an iPod/iPhone. You can thank Apple for that. But yea, the Camaro supports MP3 and WMA files only.

I'm not 100% sure but I think that the stereo will still categorize all your music by genre, etc. It should be able to pull this info from the ID3 tags of your tracks. I think this is all it's doing for stuff on MP3 players (vs somehow using the MP3 player's database of tracks). When I plugged my Zune in it had to "index" all the tracks before it could search through them so I suppose it would do the same for files on a flash drive.

I wonder if I leave the flash drive in the USB port all the time, that it will not need to index all the time. 32 GB of stuff might take it awhile.

Thanks for your help too.

I just hope the stereo doesn't freak when it sees my 30GB player and realizes it has movies on it too :P

I sure hope it supports WMA Lossless files. If it does then I can just copy all of my music from my Media Center PC without having to transcode any of it.

Nope, there are actually 4 WMA formats. WMA Lossless is the only one that is identical to the original source input when decompressed. All WMA files are compressed to some degree or another.
