I've been advised by my resident 4th gen expert to avoid synthetic while the miles are lower. LS1s apparently run better on regular oil, so synthetic need only be utilized once you hit 100k and longevity becomes the focus.

Makes sense. LS1s are known for oil burning. Then a thinner oil only makes that worse. I would only run it if a car had syn since new.

Every 3000-3500 miles on the V8. Mobile One. I prefer this due to the small oil filters used on these cars, the V6 is even worse. That oil comes out black as well at 3K using Mobil One. The cleaner the oil, the better.... definitely not money thrown out the door.

+1 Nothing wrong with changing the oil every 3k. Syn oil will last a little longer But I don't believe all there claims and seen a few messed up motors with the so called 10k Mobil 1 oil change. Filters are the first to fail. After 3k there shot. No matter what brand. The inside of it is trashed and about to fall apart.

Don't let me trample on your smugness. Just know that being holier-than-thou comes at a cost.

I've hit the year mark before even rolling 5k miles. Car had 3800 when I changed it 2 weeks ago. I change at 5k usually with synthetic in all my cars. I know I'm changing prematurely, but it keeps me in a good habit of remembering those milestones, plus it turns into a chance for me to look the car over, bumper to bumper.

Bingo. I change a bit early as well, generally at about 5k. (which tends to roll over around the same time my oil life indicates 10-20% remaining)

Changing at 3k is just

I was changing it at about 3k, but the oil life meter was still at like 60%... The latest change, last week was at about 4900mi, and the oil life meter STILL read 40%... WTF?

I hope you at least changed the filter. Filters go to crap fast. Sure the oil is good but that filter is trashed. You could be doing more harm then good. Many people overlook the filter and keep changing every 6-7k or so
