What I did with both of my kids was this, year one a completely disposable car. My son had a Corsica, and my daughter had a Tempo. After a year of accident free driving, they each got to upgrade.

Same here, his current car is a 1999 Mercury Sable. He takes care of that, then we'll look into something better.

1984 is arguably the worst year. That is going to be a money pit. I wouldn't buy it. Looks like a vette but is an unreliable dog.

I would pass on the vette for a 16 year old. I think you can find lots of good options for a 16 year old for under 10k. My son is 2 years old but this is something I have always thought about.. well since 2 years ago. What would be his 1st car? In MY case. I want him to have a RWD car so he understands the physics of it but also something that is safe and moderate power. Not a V8 for sure. So, with that in mind... I would look into the 4th gen V6 Fbody. great safety ratings for their time. |

Try the cobalt sport (2.4l). It's got plenty of power and performance for a new driver while not being dangerously quick. It's available in an automatic and has quite a bit in the aftermarket department if you and your son want to work on it together later on. He'll think it's cool and you'll be happy.

01-03 330ci BMW. Great power, Safe, reliable. Just speaking from my experience. I have an 01 with 187K miles on it with the original clutch.. great on gas, fun to drive and you can find them under 10K right now.

I would walk in there and tell them I have $9,000 cash (or whatever it's worth). I just bought a 2000 with 80k on it, best purchase I've ever made. It comes with a warranty as well. It's fast, but not stupid fast. Good safety ratings. I think it's completely stupid to put your children in a random car that's a pile of junk just because "they're going to crash it". What happens when they get hit going 60 & the car flips 2-3 times? The older the car, the more likely you're never going to see them again. I would rather go into debt up to my eyeballs for my children than let them die because of my greedy ass. |

I got a 94 yoda pickup and jacked it way up! My brother also got 94 yoda and my dad had one for a few years.
Only problem with me is I figured out all the money that can be made in used cars, I'm 20 now and Have owned more than I can count on both hands and toes |
