Rattle canning with just some walmart rustoleum is going to be a bad idea. It might cost less than $20 to do the wheels but it is gonna hold up pretty crappy.

The duplicolor wheel coating is made specifically for the application and if applied correctly and allowed to cure correctly makes a very durable finish. The total cost for me to do my wheels was less than $50 and about 7 hours of time. Which, for me being the DIY fanatic I am, was well worth it.

I used dawn dish soap to clean the wheels prior to scuffing. This will help strip any oils/contaminants. I then used compressed air and a terry cloth to dry the wheel. After scuffing, I cleaned again with the dawn, dried and looked for any spots I missed with the sandpaper. Cleaned / dried again until ALL spots were hit. Then painted.

This isn't for everyone. Most people are going to feel that the time and effort saved by going with a powder coater is worth it. For a handy DIY'r this is a cost effective way of getting the look you want and saying that you did it yourself.

2Devious your rims came out beautiful!!! Did you paint the insde too or just the outside face of the rims?

I wanted to powder coat them, but if you're getting good durability I may just save my money and do it this way........

I only did the outside, as the inside was already finished in a gloss black.

I have one rim that has a small flaking part on it (very edge). I'm curious about it...and was thinking I might be able to fix it myself. I was thinking of sanding it down a bit, polishing it up, and then re-clearing. I don't know...but think I could do it.

Painted the rims up today, i started at 9am and finished around 9pm. Had a friend help do a little sanding and a 12 pack, a 6 pack, and a pizza later its all done. They came out looking great! Came out looking almost like a gun metal black. I added the bowties in the middle got them from Bigwormz. The hardest part was sanding these things all up and down! Oh and the duplicolor wheel spray paint nozzle was killing my finger! My finger is seriously numb right now! All worth it though, the only other experience i have painting are my calipers and engine cover which i did over a month ago.

here are mine. Powder coated the lugnuts as well. Water stains easily but I like the way they look.

I couldn't resist and try to do this to see those black/red wheels on a more realistic way.
