Seriously. If you want stripes you should have them painted.
1. Itll last longers, wont end up bubbling and peeling off. 2. Its more flush & 3. It looks better. Hell im painting my GOOOOOOLD one on. Well not me but they'll be painted.

Not to contradict you here but alot of that is not true. Cheap clears are hard. Expensive clears are soft. They are not tinted either. They are clear. A properly prepared surface will take new paint just fine. OEM paint is as thin as it can be with an acceptable amout of orange peel. A custom paint job with have more clear applied and will also be wet sanded and buffed to remove the peel. Dealerships for the most part do not do this step either. That is why you will also get an edge. Almost any edge can be sanded and smoothed out provided enough clear was applied. It is very possible to get stripes painted on your new camaro with professional results. Those areas, if done right, will have a better paint job on them than the factory. Hope this clears things up (no pun intended). |

Well, the clears I've seen are/were not clear, so we're just going to have to agree to disagree. I've seen blend panels change/flop colors with only application of clear. I haven't seen all the clears out there, only PPG and Dupont. I didn't suggest that it wouldn't work, or can't be a good job, only that he consider what can happen if he's not careful with whom does the work. This isn't going to be a cheap mod' and I'm sure there's value in having a general idea (which I was trying to convey) on what to think about when getting into something like this.

Radz,
Clear IS clear. Maybe your stuff was dirty or contaminated. I have never sprayed clear (PPG, DuPont, House of Color, Alsa) that wasn't. Even the cheaper sub brands like Omni are clear. No agreeing or diagreeing about it. Even if there is clear left to harden in a mixing cup, if its not garbage (and PPG is not) it will harden into a clear block. It is also not that big a deal, expensive or hard to do if you are clearing the whole part (hood, trunk lid). You can run into problems trying to blend new clear into old clear. Sorry if it feels as though I'm rippin on ya but I hate to see people scared away from something that is not hard or expensive. I'm all about people doing their own thing and having a ride that is totally unique. Peace bro |

PAINT IT!!!!

I'm getting the same color combo and want the Transformers bumblebee stripes which are much longer and wider. My dealer is sending to the paint shop for me. This guy is awesome; he painted wood grain on the owner's SSR. All panels are to be removed: hood, front fascia, rear deck lid and spoiler. All taped painted and then cleared as a whole unit. Stay away from the gills. It will not be easy to clear this properly as tha panel will not be removed which means the entire car would ned to be taped and cleared to blend properly. I'm number one at mydealer and should have it in my garage sometime in March. I'll post photos when I get it done; please do the same. |

Im gonna have to agree 100% with King Mouse. Clear is Clear. I understand where your coming from about being carefull who you chose to do it cause obviously some paint shops arent carefull and use dirty equipment. An aftermarket paint job is the way to go no doubt about it. Ive paint stripes on a factory base coat, pinstriped, and cleared over them, then wetsand and buff and there is NO edge at all. And the stickers WILL mess up the factory paint if left on for a long time. The UV rays cant get to the paint under them and when you take them off the paint under them isnt faded like the rest of the car. It isnt as bad on newer cars because alot of the newer clears have UV blockers but its still pretty noticable. I say look at the photoshops and if you see somthin you like then do it. Dont worry about what others think cause most of the time they just hate cause 1) they dont know how to get it, 2) they cant afford it get it, or 3) the wife sais they cant get it.
