I know that this could be completely off the mark but what if the dealer gives the deposit back and takes over the ownership of the order that he placed...because he's thinking these cars are gonna come off the lot at a massive premium? Just a guess.

Or it could be he has a heart of gold (cough cough splutter splutter) and wants to give you your money back b4 he folds (cough cough splutter splutter)?????

Interesting!

EDIT: After re-reading the first post I am CONVINCED this is a stealership tactic to get you to buy it later at a ridiculous price. Go back and tell them you WONT accept the return of the cheque and you want to keep your order with GM. DONT back down!

I tend to agree with this assessment. No dealer out of the kindness of their hearts send you back your deposit in this manner. I have to agree that this might be a dirty trick to get all of the people who ordered their Camaro's at MSRP to back away from their contracts and that is exactly what you will do if you cash the check unless it is written and signed otherwise. So get it in signature that your order stands and is not canceled before you cash it and you should be alright from this tactic. If they refuse, then you know what they're doing. Either way, I would look to place another order elsewhere but try and keep the one you have if possible with a signed contract.

It could be several reasons, but you better go cash that check while its still good. GMAC was going to shut off credit to the dealerships if they didn't get part of the money the banks got. If that happened, dealerships wouldn't have gotten the cars anyway because GMAC wouldn't have allowed them to. But as of yesterday that changed. Be on the safe side and cash that check and find another dealership to order from. That way you get your money back and you will have two orders. Whichever one comes through first you go with.

The letter they sent him says that his order will stand as is so the car will be in his name. Any contract or any thing they agreed to when the order was placed is still valid. The dealer can't take over the car or increase it's price without legal repercussions as he didn't cancel the order.

I was watching some news story this morning and a Dealer was going to resign being a Chevy Dealer. He had other car lines to carry him through!!!

Who knows the rest of the story behind this?

This stinks of funny business! In my 50+ years of life, I have never seen a company give money back to anyone prior to going out of business. Typically, with few exceptions, the reason for going out of business is that there is no cash to stay in business. The only ones that get money in this case are the secured creditors, and that is based on liquidation revenue, often pennies on the dollar. I am not sure of the angle being that the car is in your name, but this does look like he has a better offer and is trying to push you out. I would challange the dealer on this letter/move. You still may want to cash the check asap and run with the money (assuming it is good). HOWEVER - BE AWARE, AS SOON AS YOU CASH THAT CHECK THE CONTRACT WILL BREAK AS THE DEPOSIT IS PART OF THAT CONTRACT! In any case I would not want to be in your shoes right now.

Your order will remain as it is now, on order, and you will be given the opportunity to purchase the auto when it arrives, however I can not in good conscience hold your deposit.

i'm with the poster above, sounds like they want to order your car and then sell it to the highest bidder.

if they were going out of business they would have gone through your 1k a long time ago.

Dicey..... But things as we knew them even 2 months ago have changed. Every one was "happy" then to pay MSRP as there was this threat that all the dealers would collaborate and only sell the car for 5 or ten over MSRP. Now the dealers are struggling to stay alive. Not only is his sales down 45% but he can't order stock for the floor as he has no credit. In the life of a general manager rarely does he get to sell at MSRP.

ALL the rules have changed since they got 5 or 10 over on the GTO and it was limited to 18,000 the Ist time out.

There are no limit of dealers who will sell at MSRP...so be on the safe side and forget what this guy is up to and just find another deal. No orders have been drawn at this time ,so do not worry about losing your space.

The dealer is Cecil Clark Chevrolet, for those who are in the central Florida area. Google them if you're interested. Hell if your willing to, do me a favor and call them up and start asking them questions, but dont give tell them anything about the website (camar5) or anything about my situation.

Just start asking them about how many they are allowed to order, and ask them if they go with them what # you will be on the list. I am currently number 3 on the list.

I hope they arnt folding, and I hope they arnt stabbing me in the back raising the price over MSRP. I called CamaroScotty and talked to him for about 10 minutes. If i cant find a dealership in Florida I can work with, I may be doing buisness with Scott.

Its still too early to say anything. I'll be giving them a call after the new year and just get any information I can. Ill keep you guys posted.
