You'd think, but sadly not the case. The orange peel on a $200k car is just about as bad as it is on a $20k car.... as Todd demonstrated the work required to improve it is pretty substantial and I'm sure Ferrari couldn't turn out cars at a reasonable rate with that kind of finish without substantial cost or time added. Also, the number of people who would genuinely care enough to notice is probably pretty small. Visit any exotic get together and count how many 6 figure cars have paint that looks like its been washed with a push broom and a bucket of playground sand.

On a side note the 458 has to be their sexiest car yet... that thing just oozes beauty.

Ferrari has to pay bills and keep overhead down just like everybody else :(

Remember that Ferrari is a low volume manufacturer, and they are responsible for some of the most cutting edge performance in the world, and this costs money. In order for them to stay viable they have to keep costs down.

Regarding the orange peel, this is common place (and will likely get worse) as enviromentally friendly (water based) paints continue to take market share. As far as the swirls and scratches, it is no different than any dealership. Why pay a true professional 40-50/hour to wash and detail the cars when you can have the lot boy wash it for 8/hour with a brush.

Amazing write up. Nice to see the attention to detail in the step by step process and photos. It is amazing how many people swear their Camaro has no orange peel. I think a lot of people need glasses.
