Magnetic block heaters suck. You have to plug them in when the car is still warm and the cord is too short and they only work if your oil pan is steel and they only warm the oil. The best luck I ever had with a coolant heater was one that grafted into the lower radiator hose in such a place that convection would carry warm coolant up into the block. Put that on a 74 'burban with a snowplow and never had a problem starting it even with the 25 yr old (at the time) rochester carb on it, even with the -20 to -30 spells we had here when I owned it.

The SS has something the V6 doesn't have, that is probably using the location a block heater would otherwise occupy.
