I could listen to a number of cars with my eyes closed and pick out the LS3 both at start up and with revving...it has a sound of it own and as your love affair with your Camaro blossoms, you will grow to love that distinct sound too.

I was going to recommend this ..... back in my gt days that wast the first thing we did. for the camaro. their are 4 cats and 2 resonators. pull all that out . put in 2 (1each side) Hi flow cats.cost of around 300 for the cats and 200 to get installed. so for about 500 bucks. you get great sound and BETTER performance.the stock mufflers flow pretty good. hey 500 bucks why not? if you want a cat back system later you did not wast any $$$$$$$$$$$ |

With my 2005 Mustang GT, all it took to wake it up was a Borla S-type axle-back (the only sound clip I have is on the Dyno...)
As others have stated, you won't be able to duplicate it... but (IMO) the Stainless Works Chambered w/o headers sounds AWESOME! |

Here's a basic idea of what I am looking for (even with the exhaust, the tone is fairly similar, just louder)
This is the FM, AT I'm looking at: Closest thing I can find so far, has that tight, bassy compressed sound.... (if that makes any sense) Just so hard to tell from video clips... (recording quality, camera placement, other mods, etc..etc...)

The distinctive sound you are after is due more to the engine than the exhaust system behind it.

I think a lot has to do with the firing order of each engine because the old 4.6 mod motors were designed to sound like the old 4.9 they replaced, they sounded good with upgraded exhaust but they never was a powerful threat to the LS1-3 gm engines which themselves have a much different firing order from the original chevy small blocks. Ford did change the firing order in the new 5.0 engines and they do not sound like the previous engines at all but more like a traditional american v8, I guess they felt power was more important than sound. And do not forget that ford equips the gt with shorty headers stock from the factory to get every bit hp out the engine to compete with the Camaro. GM could have emulated the ford sound but they knew we would not stand for that, so they just gave us a unique sound of our own.
Remember the rear cans on the SS has a unique resonance/drone eliminating design that makes the car really quiet until you get down on it. Just removing the cans sounds really great with no need for a cat-back in my opinion. The BEST sounding V-8 by a huge margin is the LS9 ZR1 Corvette which is LS3 based, so it's not without reason to assume that we can duplicate THAT sound in the Camaro with a little trial and error engineering. I wonder what the LS based engines would sound like with a 180 degree exhaust headers like they run @ Daytona and Talladega super speedways on the nascar race engines which make them sound like the old Indy car V-8's from the turbo charged days. That WOULD be unique.

I personally like the sound of the LG Motorsports Super-Pro long tube headers and exhaust system even though I have yet to hear one in person.

Get the flowmaster cat back... I am not a big flowmaster fan, and had spintech and other brands on my old cars...but flowmasters on the LS3 is the best way to get that real old school muscle car sound that I think you want. I have heard and drove an SS with headers and 1 chamber flowmasters and it sounded so increadable! Yes it will drone, but drone does not bother me. I am getting 1 chamber flowmasters and headers in march. There is chambered pipe systeme out there that sounds good too, cant remeber the name off hand. The youtube vids just dont cut it, but there is one with a SS with a mild cam and flowmaster cat back... sounds just like the old school small blocks, but even better!

If I could just hear one of these Stainless Works Retro Chambered kits in person, I think i could finally make my exhaust decision!

different engine different sound. It will never be the same.
But I honestly think my LS3 sounds pretty damn good with stock exhaust. It got substantially louder and deeper with more miles. I even had a friend ask me if I had a flowmaster system after he heard me do a launch. |
