thats not a cutaway, they had an insert attached to the panel, look closely, the normal panel has a recessed Bow Tie, the one here sticks out some... you just need to get some material in a different color and glue it to the existing insulation with industrial adhesive that will not deteriorate with heat.

Car paint is used to paint engine blocks and it holds up pretty well. If I were to do it I would spray some Lizardskin ceramic insulation on the top side of the sheetmetal before I attached it to the hood, just in case.

I had an idea, if he cuts it out just get a piece of the aluminum backed insulation I have seen put into cars and just slip it behind the cutout(aluminum side viewable), let the existing insulation clips hold it in place.

It almost looks like you could cut out part of the hood behind the cowl and make it a functional cowl induction hood... without the insualtion pice of course. The insulation isnt there to protect the paint guys. Like it was said before, its mainly for sound and cosmetic reasons so that the underside of the hood dosnt have to be smoothed out. A piece of isulation is much cheaper then another piece of aluminium to make it looked finished.

I know what you're talking about. I'm just saying use heat resistant paint to paint the bowtie.

Ohhh I see. You mean cut the bowtie insulation out, then go back and paint the UNDERSIDE of the hood where the insulation used to be with some sort of heat resistant paint. My Bad. Been busy at work and it just didn't click. Still don't think I'd try it but that but would be better than nothing I guess.

Heh, close. No, I was saying just paint the insulation. The part that is beveled in for the bow tie.

Got it. Certainly sounds like the least amount of modification.

I have taken the insulation out of every car I've ever owned with no effects to the paint. I even have an El Camino that I've owned for 18 years with it removed. I've noticed that after time if left in, the insulation collects dust and dirt. Everytime you close the hood, some of that dirt is shaken onto the engine (which I always keep detailed because I'm anal).

I used brake caliper paint to fill in the word sky that appears on the insulation under my saturn sky hood it came out nice. The only problem is the insulation really soaks up the paint so you have to put on alot of coats before the paint looks good.

its hit or miss with some cars. ive seen plenty with the stock insulation in that are cleaner than anything, and others with no insulation that are dirty as crap. my fiberlgass hood didnt come with insulation for my 94Z, so I didnt install any. however, I will not be pulling the insulation from my hood or cutting it to reveal the bowtie. if people wanna see what color my car is they can move back 2 feet.
