Back in Black

I have lived in Hampton Roads since 2001 and it has become much worse over time. The car scene has blown up, and it is great to have many people sharing the same hobby. The problem now is that since this has become so popular, the street racing scene has become rediculous. So cops are finding any way they can to stop people from modifying their cars. The exhaust law has been in effect for as long as I can remember, but they have started enforcing it a lot more lately due to the street racing trend. Just ask anybody local that is into cars about 564. That's pretty much where it all came to a head. Now if you drive a sporty car, you are a target. I have read the law, and basically it is up to the cop to decide how loud your exhaust should be. The judge will back it up too, even if your car is bone stock you can get a ticket. There is simply a lack of knowledge among the police force. With the media frenzy of today, street racers are America's next big killer, and anybody with a modified car is a target. It is a shame that there are law abiding citizens out there that want to enjoy the car hobby who have to live in fear of being targeted by police constantly. Thank god for organizations such as the SEMA action network out there who try to stand up for our rights. If you really want to get technical, the aftermarket companies should take a look at the laws and see which of their products really are 50 state legal. As a matter of fact, I think I'm going to write the SEMA action network about the Virginia issue right now. I'm sure they are aware of this, but I need my voice to at least be heard. It is also my understanding that any modification violations are now considered moving violations and points are taken off your lisence. if this is the case, then those new civil remedial fees may apply. What a shame.

I live in northern Virginia; Bristow to be exact, and I commute to Falls Church every day. I've had friends with insanely loud exhaust systems that never had an issue. I've also had friends that have been fined for everything from their truck being too high to their car being too low, stereo systems too loud, tint too dark, stickers on windows, even a small decoration hanging from the rear view mirror; but never loud exhaust.
The guys with the bikes down the block will blast their bikes at 2, 3, or 4 in the morning right by my house. They've startled me awake numerous times along with my wife and two kids. It's ridiculous. |
