Did the teflon tape on the screw fitting (it was leaking oil until I did) and I don't have an oil filler breather.
TAPSHIFT, I replaced my checkvalve fitting with a non-valve piece that SC2150 sent me because of the rattle you're speaking of. |

Mike, the part(s) taht came in was a crank position sensor for my sons Grand Prix and not the quick disconnects I thought. Segway to a plug. Patrick at GMpartshouse is great to deal with.
Anyway Mike, where did you mount your catch can? Mine wouldn't fit as designed so I mounted to the top bolt on the radiator using the RX bracket. If it's a harmonic vibration in the hoses perhaps zip tying the two together may provide a cancelling effect. I have to say the can catches a very high percent of the total oil going through the system. fwiw. Tracy fixed me up with a 1/4 turn ball socket valve. Mine is definitely closed.

My can is mounted where it is intended to go on the passenger side with the supplied bracket. I tried zip tying the hoses together, no help!

Guess I should have gone with the Elite Engineering Catch Can for the couple bucks more that it cost. Looks like it's built better, I just liked the idea of the drain in the bottom like RX has.

Use a piece of garden(or any) hose to pinpoint the leak. Hold 1 end to your ear and move the other end around the area making the hissing noise. Where it is the loudest hiss is where you have a vacum leak and should be fixed asap. Just my 2 pennies. My catch can makes 0 noise.

I did just that and the hissing is coming from the hoses. I inspected the hoses and they're fine, no holes. The sound seems to be from the gasses flowing through the hoses not leaking out of them.

I definetly do not have a vacum leak.
I dont know why it makes noise now.I don't recall it making noise before. As said,it doesn't really do it much when cold. It is kinda a rapid gurgle sound. My can is empty of oil though. I still don't think it's a problem as long as there is no Vacum leak.

I chose the Rx over the Elite because I know the Elite uses a mesh screen inside and I worried about it getting clogged up. That and the price. I started this thread not to bash Rx or Elite but to try to get to the bottom of what's causing this annoying hissing and to see if anyone else was experiencing this. I truly believe in the technology and purpose of using a catch can and really want this thing to work!

I'm sure both cans work great.I have had mine awhile now. Drained for the first time 2 weeks ago when I changed my oil. That is when I payed more attention to it and noticed the noise. Pulled to the side of the road one day to check and make sure it wasn't leaking oil or anything after the first drain. I was like,"what the hell is that noise"

Does it gurgle constantly, or when the engine is under load i.e. accelerating?

Can't hear it inside the car at all. I would assume under accelleration with low vacum it would not make any noise. I guess I could have the wife rev it while I observe, but that would not put much load on the engine. It defineatly is really wierd.

The noise mine makes is always there and most definitely makes it's presence know at idle.
I could feel the vibration causing the sound in the can and hoses. The hose is just common transmission cooler line shouldn't be the root cause of noise. Mine didn't make this noise until recently. I think someone else illuded to this earlier, but I wonder if the dispursion tube is vibrating like a tuning fork. Adding a support rod from the low end of the dispursion tube to the side of the can might be a cure. Unfortunately I don't know how to test this without destroying the can.

Noisy catch can
fyi.....I've just received a PM from Tracy who is reviewing this thread. He is sending me a replacement fitting that does not contain a check valve. Hopefully this will elliminate the noise I am experiencing.

Sorry for the late entry into this discussion, were in the middle of moving to a new facility 3 times the size.
In the instructions there should be a note on the last page addressing the sound being the checkvalve doing its job, those that dont care for it just send me your shipping address and I'll send the non-checkvalve fitting to replace it (all cans now ship with it as an option) its a simple swap. If anyone is close enough just come in and I'll do it while you wait, and then I can listen to what you are describing. With thousands of these out there we have never had any leaks but I still want to have a car with the symptom come in so I can see what your describing. That will ne the only way I can figure out if it is not the checkvalve and something else. Even without the checkvalve the can is the most effective in trapping oil and preventing oil pull through on the market but I need someone with the issue to bring their car in. |
