Seriously, though. Even shorties are only legal if they're CARB approved in California; and, with the recent changes to CARB regulations, each component has to have a sticker/stamp with the EO Number (from what I read).

Thankfully, the OP doesn't live in this god-forsaken state; so, it just comes down to whether or not the performance increase with long-tubes, and possibly high-flow cats, is worth that annoying little CEL on your dash and your remote-start not working.

If these cars are like the 4th gens, shorties don't net much and aren't worth the cost and time to put in.

OK, I have to ask: What's "CEL"?

Check out this thread for more info on shorties.

The Doug Thorleys are very popular. The price of the headers wasn't bad, but they need to be welded on, so the total cost was a little expensive. I like 'em though. From the dyno graphs others have posted, looks like some nice gains all across the RPM range. They made a subtle, but nice change to the sound. Nice thing is, no CEL and no tune required. From what I've read on here, Ivan at Southwest Speed has sold a ton of these things

Well for Me I do not plan to move out of the state, I was born and raised in SoCal. I am lucky that in the area I now live I do not have to have my car smogged every two years after that 5 year point. For me if and when I install headers it will be the D.T. Shortie Headers. I also am not going to do something to my car and then take it off for the Political Idiots of this State.

While I am bouncing back and forth from SoCal and Phoenix right now,i actually live in indiana and have a manual so no remote start.
I think I'm willing to deal with the CELfor the bigger gains LTs have. But I need to know for sure that the CEL won't cause any damage to my Vic' toria.

Person to ask about the no-tune that ran the longest with the CEL was Poormans. Like I said, I ran mine a few months before deciding to go with one for different reasons. He now is looking to do the same(for the same reason as I did).

yeah, I ran (am still running) with long tubes and no tune. I've had them on for over 10,000 miles now. I have just over 17000 on the car total. Car runs fantastic, pulls good, sounds great. Wouldn't change a thing. Although, now that I'm running nitrous, i'll be getting a tune in the very near future. (waiting on that new throttle body!)

So, to answer your question, yes, you can run Long Tube headers with no tune on the v6 camaro, and you wont hurt anything.

edit: although, if you have the auto transmission, I would get a tune for the tranny anyway. Had I had an auto, i would have gotten trifecta right after i put all my bolt-ons on. lol

Well, based on poormans info, I think I'm leaning toward the LTs. Its gonna be a while though, so we'll see. Seems to me though that the price from short to long is worth the extra gains. I can deal worth the CEL, especially knowing that there's a tune available to correct it when I can reel that money in.

Thanks for the Vine! Indeed they have been popular and they seem to really "sell themselves." Great product and fantastic price.

While I agree with you that there is no guarantee.....it's hard to dispute 1 CEL in over 267 sets that we've sold.

And the one was a guy who welded his own and later posted that he found a bad weld and leak in his work. He corrected it and has since not had a returning CEL....

There are certainly benefits to both that are unparalelled.

We're doing up some Proto LT's as I'm sure you've read about. They will most likely be out later this year.

Appreciate all the rap about both the LT's and Shorties for the V6 cars. It's great to get some real world guys giving their experience to everyone to share.

Good work all!
Ivan
