My 2009 Harley Nightster had the plate mounted on the lower left-hand side with two bright blue OEM leds that put light onto the plate and a big area around it. I've also seen a few BMWs and Lexus' with blue LED plate lights. I guess if it's OEM it's easier to get away with it.

OP, I know it kind of sucks, but if law enforcement gets you for it once, they will again and again if you don't fix it. Better off just putting different bulbs back in and avoiding any future hassle.

Edit:

I may be wrong on this, but...
1. Reverse lights are only activated when the car is in reverse gear, never when cruising, therefore an exception.
2. I'm pretty sure it's illegal to drive with a cargo lamp on in a pickup. It's only there for loading/unloading the bed when the truck is parked. Come to think of it, I've never seen a pickup driving with one on. You would probably get pulled over pretty quick.

I absolutely hate austin cops around here. I don't know anyone that doesn't think their pieces o crap. Not saying ALL of them are, but considering theres nearly no crime in the area (I live in cedar park) that all they do is pull over soccer moms for mindless issues. I have gotten pulled over (onto my drive way as i was returning home) for going 4 over. Its ridiculous. Who am i going to kill going 34 on a 30?

He said no outward facing white lights could be installed rear of the A pillar.

I respect law enforcement officials in general...
But, I'm sorry, come on, that Austin cop is just another authority figure hassling citizens for frivolous B.S! Thats just shameful and embarrassing. Just my honest opinion.
We are still allowed to have an opinion, I hope. WTF?!

Good contribution Brantley! The same goes for illegal tint, smoked covers, smoked license plate covers, etc. We sometimes forget that just because something looks cool, or we don't see the law as making any sense, we still need to be aware and avoid geting pulled over period. Especially with the demand for increased revenues communities are faced with.

Watch out "Sarah"

You might just get put in jail for not having your front license plate!

Lol!

That blows Ron, is that something that requires the back bumper to come off to do or can you just change them where they sit?

And to balance out all the Austin cop hate, every time I've been pulled over I have most definitely deserved it!

Nope back bumper does not need to be removed. If you look above the license plate, the two small square housing comes off with a squeeze tab, I believe.

2 feet away from the curb? You must have been in the middle of the street!

I had my car dyno-ed and the person running the dyno was a recently retired VA police officer and he also taught radar at the Academy. He gave me a printout of one of his classes where it stated that keying of CB radios or any High powered radio device can affect the reading on police radar. If this is the case is there a posibility with my lawyer being given this info that this ticket could be dropped instead of just reduced. BTW i really was not going anywhere close to 99MPH it was actually more like 75 in a 65. Just asking....
Radar can be affected by other radio transmissions. But the radar is designed to detect the interference and go into an error mode when it happens. Speed readings are not displayed when radio interference is detected by the radar.

Just flip your license plate upside down so the "blue hue" is farther away from the white lights.

is it illegal to drive with an upside down license plate???? probably.... :(

On the subject of upside down license plates, this one is by far the best I have seen. Yes, you read it upside down.
