You don't have to turn in the temp tags as they expire and are not reusable after 30 days.

I bought a car in Houston TX and drove it to Little Rock AR. All I needed was the paper temporary tag on the back and a valid insurance card to drive away after the car was paid for. I went to get the permanant tags a few days later and pay the sales tax at the local revenue office. No biggie.

Its like Banshee said. We can't issue you a temp or regular plate for your state if you're not from Michigan, but they have a special plate that says intransit on it. It is a paper throw away, but good for like 2 or 3 weeks

I would say in this case. I would pay the 150. Whats an additional 150 in the grand scheme.

However, I know you meant the state's Department of Revenue.
In Michigan, the place where you get your plates, license, and titles is called the Secretary of State..

Problem is that it varies even within each State. Sales tax here in Erie County is different from Niagara is different from Nassau...

are you guys nuts?

when you buy a car you get temp tags no matter what state your in. the tags are valid in any state as you have 30 days to register your car in a state once it begins residing there...

so,

-buy the car
-drive
-get your plates and registration tags when you want within those 30 days
-dont pay for some guy to go to the dmv for you esp since it's 150 bucks, maybe 25 but def not 150.

sillys.

----

btw, afaik; there is no such thing as automotive sales tax... it's just sales tax for the county you register it in. so find a cheap county and register at the dmv there.

Why risk a $150 ticket. I think an intransit plate is like $10 or $15 dollars at the most. You may also need an MSO (Manufacturers Statement of Origin) to register the vehicle if you are buying from outside of your home state. We have need to get them before for customers that live outside of michigan or apply for it if we dealer trade a vehicle to an out of state dealership. Geez, I probably just opened another can of worms with this. LOL!

Actually my friend, this varies by state. In the Commenwealth of Virginia, we have a different sales tax rate for autos than regular old sales tax. Vehicles are only 3% where normal stuff, 5.25%. Doesn't matter what county in VA, state-wide it is 3%. Trust me, I did my homework because I'm buying my car in Michigan and registering in VA.

In Texas, the sales tax on vehicles is just the base State Sales Tax, which is 6.25% and its statewide, doesn't matter which county you live in, but you have to register the car in the County you live in.
