I didn't know that. Guess it pretty well answers my question. Thanks, 3 SS's!

I'm surprised how many people thought it would be dead forever. I knew it would make it back someday.....and that day is now

So what, GM decided they needed to redesign it properly, and one model year wasn't enough, so they "took a break" of a couple years and did it right?

No, due to the popularity of the car I thought that it would make a come back at some point.

I was pretty certain the Camaro was dead in 2002. Here's my take on its revival:

In 2001 America's business center was attacked & destroyed. Financial markets & economy suffered as a result. Bush cut capital gains tax and had Greenspan lower interest rates for banks borrowing money from the Federal Reserve Bank. This enabled the US economy to recover from 9/11 and caused a significant upsurge in capital markets, the stock market, corporate balance sheets and consumer confidence.

Ford then came out with the retro Mustang in late 2004 and, with a booming economy, consumers snapped up the new retro Mustang at a fast clip (150,000 units/year) despite dealer markups. GM couldn't ignore this market segment (pony/muscle car) and scrambled to create a retro Mustang fighter.

In 2006 GM introduced the Camaro Concept, while the economy was still in the boom phase of the boom/bust cycle (caused by artificial money & credit expansion). It took GM 3 years to bring their concept to the marketplace. By the time they did, the bust cycle kicked-in, along with anti-business Democrats seizing power in Washington DC.

The Camaro could never be conceived and developed in today's political and economic climate. But fortunately for us, it was conceived and developed in more favorable times. This indeed might be the last and best Camaro ever built, unless Americans elect political leaders who are pro-business, pro-capitalist and pro-individualist. The resulting economic surge caused by a pro-business regime in Washington DC could result in even better Camaros such as a 2011 Camaro Z/28 with 552 horsepower or a 2012 Camaro ZL1 with 638 horsepower.

It really was depressing to read in the mags around that timeframe that the mustang was doubling up on the Camaro and Firebird. I mean they both spanked the Mustangs all the time on performance tests. I think the mustang V6's just sold way better than the Camaro V6's. Mustang V6's were more the norm, cause most everyone that wanted a Camaro got a Z-28 or SS cause the owners were more performance oriented.

To be honest, I didn't want it to come back. I figured if it did it'd be some FWD knock off that didn't deserve the name plate.

Yeah, I was wrong, and I'm fine with that, because the fifth gen is probably my favorite Camaro of all time.

I knew it would come back, I just never guessed it would take so long to do it. I thought in 2005 when the revamped retro mustang came out, a camaro would be quick to follow. Well its back....and its badder than ever.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

The Camaro was in hibernation.
Like a large mammal waiting to be awaken from it's deep sleep. Only to come back stronger and hungrier for some pony meat.

Lets look at the good side, gm had 6 years off, and the mustang took over the sales, but 6 years later GM made a monster of a car, could that of happened in 2003? could gm have made a car that could of taken care of the mustang a car which had the biggest sales of the year and brought the look of its 1st generation, it was 1st for 3 years, but now the camaro has turned this around.

I wish the 2009 camaro could embarrass the mustang like it did to use with sales back in 2002, mostly likely it won't happen because its eye catching with most of its models.
