Yea your right. You are definitely screwed if caught at those apeeds..

Is it possible that there isn't a speed limitation other than the rev governor?
All SS's have the P Zero's from the factory. I've never heard of GM doing away with the speed limiter on any of the 2010+ camaros.

I removed mine with the Predator tune. Like others said, it is supposed to cut out at 155.

I hit what felt like a governor on my '10 SS (LS3) when I was hitting one of our many straight-aways here in Wyoming. Mine topped out a 140 mph (roughly). However, I'm pretty sure the governor works as a rev limiter rather than a speed limiter. The governor didn't actually engage until I shifted into 6th at 139 mph. I cant remember what the rpms were. I'm pretty sure I could have gone faster (maybe 10-15 mph faster) if I hadn't shifted to 6th. Also, mine was bone stock.

I hit the gov on mine when she was stock it is 155. Popular mechanics did a top speed test at bonivill salt falts on a camaro SS and a gt 500 some one can look it up but I think the camaro was drag limited around 175

It's electronically limited. With the limiter removed (tuning), you should reach top speed in 5th gear. Check the Corvette and CTS-Vs, and you'll see that their top speeds are lower with the automatic. Realistically, I would guess the top speed on a stock SS with a tune (to remove the limiter) to be around 170-175 for an M6. The stock base Vette will do 186, so subtract 15mph or so for the aerodynamic deficiency of the Camaro.

Sound about right?

I wouldn't call that stock - because the only way to get above 155 is with a tune. All SS camaros have a limiter at 155 because of the speed rating for the tires. Just like how the LS is limited to like 118 (could be off by a few).

top speed is hit in 5th gear on stock cars. so regearing the car actually increases the top speed. just a thought.
and im waiting next week for the op to post up "totaled my car today"

and the salt flats dont count, that terrain reduces the speed by quite a bit

and to answer the OPs original question - you need to get a tune.
