As somebody who is working in R&D for said company, 10 years is a bit extreme. However, there is a general type plan that goes about 10 years out. Specifics are outlined 3-4 years in advance. For instance, the Volt based Cadillac just announced, is something I've seen in presentations for awhile now. Anything beyond that is simply a headed direction, like if there's going to be a platform change or change in engine/transmission.

F-body yes but from what i have read and heard GM knew before the 02' kill off that they would bring back the 5th gen at a later point. I do know a concept drawing of a 5th gen came out as far back as 03' and it looks a lot like the new 5th gen.

The GM Zeta platform began development in Australia (Holden) in 2000. Some people would consider this the "birth" of the 5th gen Camaro.

G8 came out in 2008, which also used the Zeta. Development and planning of the Zeta began in 2000 but it wasn't produced until 2006. The 2006 Holden Commodore was the first production car to use the Zeta.

Fairly sure there was no work done on anything Camaro related once the last 4th gen rolled off the assembly line until the 2006 concept was conceived.

And my Econ professor told us that if Ford wanted to sell more trucks, they should lower the price of a Super Duty to $20k. Apparently nobody's told him that the F-series is the best selling truck in America and the Super Duty is the best selling HD truck in America, nor has anyone informed him that $20k barely covers the cost of the powertrain/chassis, much less the body, interior, electronics, etc. Professors are mostly clueless as to what's going on in the automotive industry unless they have a personal interest in it.

I think most platforms are made for about 10 years, with small changes during this time. For example Avalance 2002 - 2012 (last year for them). 3rd Gen Camaros 82 - 92, 4th Gen 93 - 02? unless that platform tanks very bad in sales.

A decade sounds a bit long. Maybe if they include generic & flexible things like their product mix or when they plan on doing a generation change. Its possible it could take 10 years, but even then thats a stretch.

Figure about 4 years to bring a car to market, give or take a year. But thats just for the design/engineering work. Before that, they'd need to consult their crystal balls to determine what to build. But I can't see that taking 6 years on average. Maybe 1 or 2? That brings us down to a cycle time of 4-7 years for most cars. There are extreme cases, like the Lexus LFA which supposedly took an entire decade but they're pretty rare.

I once read hat when a Car company puts a new model design into production that they start the design process for the next generation of that car at that point. So about a 4-5 year planning span. I'm sure the crew at GM have been working on the next Camaro for a little while now.

Just like any other businesses out there, I am sure GM have a 10 years plan (even a longer one) but not specific to a platform or car. In the 80's a typical brand new product might take ~5 years to bring out from the time the studio start the sketching. With the advances in computer simulations (particularly crash simulations) GM and others can bring out a brand new car, starting with a blank sheet of paper, in about ~3 years. As with other auto makers, they have current product engineering as well as advanced engineering groups. As the current cars are being produced and actively changes from year to year, the advanced group already working on new products.

Avalanche was on GMT-800 from MY 2002 to 2006. GMT-900 from MY 2007-2013.

G8 production had no bearing on Camaro production. The G8 still exists in its original form in Australia as the Commodore.

Technically they aren't even on the same platform. The Camaro's Zeta is an updated version.
