Probably half way in between. Production implies that they are customer cars, and that isn't happening for a while. Meanwhile, calling them prototypes makes it sound as if they're still doing some major engineering on the car. Chances are they were built in the factory on the assembly line as test vehicles. Testing the assembly of it, testing the quality of the parts, checking the fit and finish, training the workers, those sorts of things. GM built hundreds of such cars in 2008 and early 2009 before the 2010s came out.

They won't have to do as many ZL1s because most of the kinks in the assembly line have been worked out already and its mainly just swapping one part for another. But you still have to make sure that it all works the way its supposed to.

Great find. I don't recall seeing the ZL1 under the hood before. Definitely the new grill in at least the first two cars in the row.

I didn't notice it until I saw the ZL1 convertible photos. I can see myself putting a nice matte black vinyl inter-lay in them!

I just went through every picture I could find on this site as well as others, and this is the first photo is saw with the ZL1 stamped under the hood. Very nice touch. My first mod will be to paint that orange to contrast my black and to match my orange stripe, which is my second mod.

Is it just me, or am I the only one that can't find the ZL1 stamped under the hood. Can someone be so kind as to point it out for these old eyes

On the underside of the hood, indented in the red pain by the windshield between the 2 black circles

I believe the convertible at the LA auto show had the stamped ZL1 under the hood. It is very nice.

Just look above and between the 2 black plugs on the hood. It's a large stamp in the panel.
