New GPS units are super thin and some have a widescreen. That would work great with that wide speaker cover.

EDIT: Garmin's worlds thinnest GPS.. and its wide screen. And voice command too.

Any progress on this one? Did You manage to build in a motor for the Unit to come up? Where would You connect the Power Source to?
This will be the first mod that I will do as soon as I get my Camaro.

I LOVE this idea! I have so many questions...

Looking at the pivot point you have established, how are you getting the top of the grille to close up completely once the unit is rotated back down? Are you using a limiter switch to limit the travel of the motor in both directions? Or are you using a momentary dual-polarity switch to accomplish it kinda manually? How about all the other stuff that's underneath where the speaker used to be? Did you remove anything else?

I would really like to do this myself - I have the exact same GPS unit, and haven't decided on a good location for it yet.

I am 90% done with this project. HUGE hurdles to overcome before getting to this point. All that remains is ordering a new speaker grille and permanently mount the assembly.

First off, the gear reduction motor is 2" long so that offset the centering of the navigation. Hence, the need for a new speaker grille because I initially cut the grille for a center fit.

I tried a few designs but with the space in the cavity, it just wouldn't work with what I had.

Anyway, without further adieu, here is where I am at:

switch mounted here:

and here it is in action:

I measured the height from the top of the a/c duct to the speaker grille to bend the ribbon steel to the right height. To be safe, there is a 1/8" gap in the back to clear the pivot point.

No limiter switch, I am using a DPDT center off switch for the up/down movement. I was thinking of using little pegs to establish a physical lower limit.

I completely gutted the speaker cavity. It was really tough and time consuming, especially with my battery powered rotary tool.

Got a question and it might be a stupid one. But I love what you did. I watched the video and noticed that the ambient light that is on the doors goes all the way across your dash. I have a 2011 2lt and mine only is on my doors. Is it a mod or is mine broken?

Thank you

It's another thing I did a while back. The RS package only has the lighting in the door. I used super glue and some electric light wires. I have the cloth inserts and thought the interior could use some color. Thanks for the compliments, here are some day/night pics of the light:
