First mod you had to get was Cragers, Shakles, L60's. Car rode like crap but looked good jacked up with the L 60's. Then a new set of Pioneer 6x9's with a booster in the glove box and you was ready to hit the town.

Welcome to the information superhiway. Back in the 60s and 70s you had to wait for your JCWhitney catalog, and then IF you had any money you had to send a check to the company with your order and then wait 6-8 weeks for delivery. If they didn't have it at the Auto Parts Store you were waiting forever for your new stuff.
Big mods then would be an 8-track tape player, shackles and Cragers or slot mags. Meybe a cool pillow to put on the console for your girlfriend to sit on. Girls didn't ride in passenger seats back then If you could find STP stickers, they went on too.

How about a CB Radio and 8 Track Tape Player Mounted to the bottom of the dash with the 6x9's

Our first new car (a 1972 domestic subcompact) had a built-up engine (headers, 11:1 forged, cam, etc.), aftermarket gauges, road-race oriented suspension, and wheels that were 3" wider than OE. All before the car itself was fully paid for, and it was our only car at the time. The next one (a '79 Malibu) had aftermarket wheels and tires within 1000 miles of taking delivery, and that was after having that car built to order as the most no-nonsense performance version possible at the time. Eventually it was modified more times and more extensively than the 1972. Norm |

You guys make me feel like a youngster! I didn't own a new car until 1987. LOL.
I remember my older brother's cars, and he didn't mod them. He had a '64 Impala SS that he stupidly titled over to his girlfriend while on active duty in Vietnam. The wench sold it while he was gone and got married. He had a blue '66 Corvette, yellow '69 Chevelle SS, a copper '71 Camaro, and then got into Monte Carlos. A 1974 Monte Carlo was one of my first cars. Good stuff.

I'm not so sure about that. Places like CamaroZ28 used to be pretty busy with performance discussions and FRRAX didn't talk about stuff that WASN'T performance. Plenty of performance talk on thirdgen, for that matter.
I'll give you that forced induction wasn't very big back then, though. Norm |
