Agreed, these dipsticks suck. I get the best results by checking the oil after the car sits overnight. You don't have much "tracer" oil above the actual level line. It's an easier read.

+1 OP. It seems as though the bend smears or wipes off some of the oil making it difficult to read.

I look for the wet line were the oil stops and the dry dipstick starts. Sometimes I have to flip it over to see exactly were its at.

I totally have the same problem. You will notice there are three holes in the dipstick near the hash marks. I think you can tell if oil bubbles in the holes or not thus indicating its approximate level.

Hey sorry about that.. my first thought was this guy can't be serious that I'm suggesting I want to run dirty black oil just to read the dipstick. lol.
Anyway, one could take all these replies and make them one big reply about my op cause there all on the money about the problem(s) and solutions..Thanks for the feed back guys.

LOL, I can't believe this is up. I just changed my oil the other night in a friend's back yard and I couldn't see a damn thing! It's been sitting for a couple of days now so hopefully I'll be able to read it today. I can't believe we actually have this problem. I guess it's time to start researching some aftermarket dipsticks because I honestly hate having to wait overnight to see if I'm at the correct level.

But I did not have my glasses on

As far as I can read this, the OP is not talking about the Oil, he's talking the dipstick as aftermarket

After my first oil change at the dealer, I spent several minutes trying to read oil level, and discovered the three holes worked great. Has anyone noticed smoke coming out of the dipstick hole on a hot engine? Mine has this and it is worrying me really bad. Is it normal?

I'm sure your ZL1 (4 banger) has special powers, as royal purple turns to regular colored oil after the first good heat up. BTW; If you DO have a ZL1 I would love to get a chance to beat your .............. It's not the size of the magician's wand but if He know's the magic! As I have put down SRT'S,GT's still looking for a 500. Anyway, I look fwd to beat'n that a$$

Which brings the question, how often do you guys check your oil. I know I'm guilty of not Checking it as often as I should, but I do change my oil every 3k miles

Since when is a ZL1 a 4 banger? Do you even know what 4 banger means? To those of us that know cars and car lingo, 4 banger means 4 cylinder. What do you think it means?
