There's nothing wrong with "saving a few bucks online", but that's not what he did. He paid double online. His other mistake was loosing BOTH of his original keys before replacing them. That's going to end up costing him a tow bill and a trip to the dealer and of course the dealer is not going cut him any slack, because he didn't buy the parts from them.

Got tired of using rubber bands to hold it together, so I got two fobs on Ebay for $27.00, and now just have to get them cut so I can program them myself! I don't want to take the new fob apart to put in the old key as I'm not sure how to do it right, and don't want to break it. Hope it all works!
You can buy key fob "cases" on e-bay for less than $10 and it only takes a few minutes to transfer the "guts" to the new case. There's even You Tube videos to show you how to do it. It couldn't be simpler.
If you've already bought the complete fobs, just transfer the key "blades" from your old fobs to the new ones and program them yourself. There's a little roll pin that holds the "blade" to the fob. You just drive it out and pull the blade. Just make sure you do one at a time, so that you still have a working one to do the programming with.

Still good info here given the recall fiasco. I just bought a switchblade key off ebay for $17. Hopefully it will program ok after I spend another $50 or so to get it cut. Then I'll give to the dealer for the recall so GM will stop sending me post cards.

I know this is al old thread. I found through a google search when looking up this subject. Anyway, My remote got wet and my car's alarm kept going off in the garage. I had to go out and turn it off by turning the ign on to stop it. So then I shopped for a remote online. after a lot of consideration, I decided to go to the chevy dealer to get a fob directly instead of waiting several days to a week in most cases (if not a prime associated retailer), yes it was higher. a new key comes with the keyfob, then they cut it (no charge). They said they only charge , like $50, if no key is available. I read a lot of documents and procedures on programming the key and remote, no problem I thought. Well apparently, the dealer ultimately has to program the new spare key and remote via the OBDII system at their shop. None of the so called procedures online, and You Tube work. So NOW, I need to find some time to take the car down to the dealer and leave it for a few hours. they promised to either take me where I need to go or provide a rental for a few hours. From what I see and hear, you cannot escape the dealers clutches, unless you just get lucky and the procedures work.
BTW, the remote that got wet, did eventually work again after a new battery from my old 2016 Camaro (RIP) keyfob I found in my old Hurricane Harvey stash from my old desk that got removed before the house got torn apart to rebuild from the storm.
So even with my original key and remote the system still will not recognize the new key and remote.

Likewise. I think my remote start button isn't working on the ebay's but never use it anyways. Also it's been said you can't program more than two which is false, I have 3 because ebay was a pair plus my original.

Damn man, that truly sucks. Like My Caroline said, heck of a predicament.

You will need to get it to a dealer to program.

Glad I found this thread. Maybe someone can help. My problem is that I have a replacement/spare key without a fob that works fine to crank the car which I have been using for a couple years. Now I would like to get new keys cut AND program them myself. Now the problem with this is that when I plug in my original switchblade key I get the ‘service theft system’ message. The key worked fine for a couple days then all of a sudden I get that message and can’t crank. So is my original just a dud now? Will I have to get new keys and have them reprogrammed at the dealer? Trying I avoid this the best I can and save a few bucks. Any experience with this would definitely be appreciated.

You can program 5.

Tiger, what happened to render your original key a dud? Were you trying to program the new fobs yourself?

I ran over my fob with my lawnmower and destroyed the shell. Bought a new $70 replacement fob from the dealer, but choked on $115 programming fee and having to wait an hour, which is how long they told me it would take.

So, i bought a replacement shell on Amazon for $8 and transferred the electronics from the destroyed fob (which were not damaged, apparently) and it works perfectly. I will save the $70 fob in the event of another mowing mishap. :-)

Thanks for the reply. It's been washed in a pair of jeans however it worked fine once it dried out although the buttons didn't work any more. I'm guessing the electronics in it are fried. I wonder if the blade is salvageable and I just need new internals?

Here is to program the key fob without the original.

For the standard key that is not a fob, you put in the original key and turn to ign on but not car on yet and wait for the security light to turn off and then remove original key and insert new key and turn on to ign to finish programming. I just did this recently and it worked like a charm.
