Hmm... The filter point is a good one. So what's the best filter that we could buy?

So the "corporate definition" is in line with this article.

I think I may "blow the $25" and have my engine oil analyzed at least once, maybe after the 10k mark and compare it to engine life monitor.

As a DD, I have a 2000 Subaru Outback with 192500 miles (just put 1268 miles on it over 3 days going around Oregon and WA). I change the oil on the Subaru every 3-5k miles, depending on when I get around to it. One nice thing about a Subaru, don't need to jack it up to get underneath. It still hardly goes through a quart of oil between oil changes and the last time it did, it was 100f for a month here and went through a few mountain passes at 70mph, so that is to be expected.

Still, would like to see what the analysis states after 3500 miles. If it needs a quart at 3000+ miles, I either change it including the filter or put a quart in and go to 5000+. Figure it only takes 4.2 qts, so adding a quart is like a 25% oil change...

Totally Wrong. When the message "change engine oil soon" comes on the display, you should change the oil in the next 600 miles. That is in black and white on page 9-13 of the 2010 owner's manual and from pages 10-14 and 10-15 of the 2011 owner's manual.

To the OP..... Search here in the Mechanical Maintenance: Break-in / Oil & Fluids / Servicing section and read till you go cross eyed. Two oil changes ago I went from 100% - 0% on the OLM in our 2010 2SS which covered 13,504 miles. I had the oil analyzed and it came back in great shape still. Original Mobil 1 was the oil used with a filter only change at 50%. Find my posts and read away. I have debunked every possible feel good oil change or do it at a specific mileage because that is what pawpaw used to do, dada used to do, or a "just because I can and it makes me all tingly inside" oil change.

I could link all my posts for ya here in this thread, but I am feeling like a Donkey tonight. Don't get me started on my 25,000 mile oil change intervals on my 2004 Dodge/Cummins using Amsoil AME diesel oil and a single oil filter. I have only changed the oil 5 times in 125,000 miles. I have the oil analyzed only when I change it and each time it comes back in great shape and could have gone longer too.

The "average" oil change interval for GM cars is 8200 miles, per their data. Full synthetic oils and OEM filters can easily go 15k miles.

Modern engines do not create the level of contaminates that were prevalent in older cars. Synthetic oil does not break down easily. These two factors are why the extended changes are possible.

For those of us that do not DD our Camaros, one oil change per year is plenty sufficient. Cars used for racing require more frequent oil changes, and DDs should be changed according to the DIC.

The DIC uses temperature, number of crank revolutions, and time in a complicated algorithm that determines when your oil change is due. The engineers for our vehicles spent a great deal of time figuring this out.

the 3 month/3000 mile oil change "mandate" has been an easy sell for the dealerships and quick lube places. consumer reports did a study in the mid 90s using a 7500 mile schedule with a fleet of NY taxicabs. same result...oil was good for more than that.

My 2010 Camaro has 5,259 miles and I just changed the oil & filter. I like changing the oil at 5k miles in all my cars and use synthetic oil every time.

I agree that filter technology has yet to catch up with modern oils. So, do what many fleets do, change the filter midway and top off.

Amsoil EaO, Mobil M1, Bosch Distance plus, Napa Platinum and Royal Purple oil filters have easily caught up to today's oils. Do not get sucked into the BS stainless steel mesh filters that are cleanable/re-usable. They are a far cry from being cost effective and DO NOT filter as good as the above mentioned filters.

1rst change was @ 2500, then yesterday @ 6000(Penzoil Platinum). Must admit oil was pretty burnt(don't drive it hard, either). Sure it could've gone longer, but personally, I'll stick to the 3k regiment..and my car probably thanks me for it.
And definitely recycle the oil as well.

It starts to get dirty as soon as you turn the ignition for the first time.

I read that the color of the oil is not a good way to judge how much life is left in it. Since most all oils have detergent features, probably best it is changing color...

Wxplain to us how you know your oil is dirty? Sight, smell or feel have absolutely no validity on the condition of the oil. Oil analysis is the only way to know the condition of your oil. At 3000 miles you have hardly even touched your oils capabilites.

Here's some hard cold facts in black and white.
