You NEVER buy things you can just afford. You buy items that you can pay for and still sock fist-fulls of cash into the bank. "Well, if I work 75 hours a week, skip lunch and dinner 4 times a week and keep my Central Air and lights turned off 5 days a week, I'll just be able to afford those payments.".

I have a pretty low mortgage payment since my last refinance, so I am under the percentage of spend of the average person.

I'm sure my auto expense, conversely, is higher than the average persons.

I just did the math and annually, it is 11% of my net income.

Just depends on what other monthly expenses you have. You should also consider how long you could last on your savings should you suddenly be unemployed.

Sorry, but the majority of these threads yield no real advice since everyone either paid cash for their ZL1 or is a multi-millionaire so they are spending 1% of their income on their car and are WAY smarter than you or I.

Personally, I'm in too deep on this car payment-wise. Monthly I'm about 25% of my income on this car. However, my position is probably different than the next guy. I have no mortgage, no credit card debt, etc. So I'm not living like a caveman to afford this car.

That said, I wouldn't mind something cheaper.

My car payment is about 10% of my monthly income. Then again, I own a home mortgage-free.

I try to work one overtime per pay.....so if that's the case, my Camaro payment is about 20%-23% of my take home pay. Now what I pay for federal & provincial tax (paycheque) that would be most people's car payment!!!! Our mortgage payments are what a loan officer called aggressive, and our property taxes are obscene. I pay half of both. Remember here in Ontario everytime you turn around there's a tax to be paid. My Camaro is my bad habit....I don't drink, smoke, eat out a lot, or have a desire to travel.....my "play" money goes into my car. I am smart enough to NOT get in over my head and it helps my wife makes almost double what I do.

If your gross monthly income is 8000 (you + wifey combined) and your monthly is 500... then that comes out to 0.0625 = 6.25%
