Volt - Help Me Decide

have you thought about buying a stripped down version of say...a chevy cruz? good gas milage and a cheaper car. use it for a dd anf keep the Camaro for a weekend driver. you said the 30k volt with the camaro wouldnt break you, so why not buy a much cheaper, but dependable car? That's exactly what i plan to do next year.

Why get a volt?? Get a chalet or something for a DD. you don't need a brand new car for a DD. Hell get a non S Mini Cooper and get over 40 mpg. Or a S and get 37 mpg and have a super fun driving car as well.

Any good used TDI VW is also a great solution for the daily driver blues...most do way over 40 mpg on the diesel.

The Cruze Eco is also a great alternative if you must buy new.

The Cruze is nice. I don't mind driving it at all. But if it meant giving up my Camaro, Oh H - E - double hockey sticks NO. My V6 Camaro made a great daily driver for 2 years & would go back that way in a heartbeat rather than to go Camaroless. For the price you describe paying for the Volt, you can easily trade for a gently used V6 Camaro (probably do a lot better) & keep your permagrin on AND get great gas mileage. Just sayin'.

The price of a Volt is reVOLTing, and all of us taxpayers then have to subsidize you even further to entice you to buy it. Meanwhile, the ZL1 owner pays $2600 gas guzzler tax before even driving it off the lot, when in fact, it pays more tax given its bad gas mileage, while the Volt driver gets the carpool lane with but one person in the car.

While I admire your dedication in helping the tax payers, you have to remember that I've paid my own share, but that's not even the point. The money has already been allocated, so whether I take it or Joe Blow, it won't make a difference.

Great suggestions guys! I need to see what I'm going to do. The Cruz is definitely a second option.

Because that isn't how the $7,500 credit works. You get to take the credit on your taxes to go toward WHAT YOU OWE. Let's say when all is said and done you owe $2,000 to the IRS that is how much of the credit you get to use. You don't get a refund of $5,500 from the govt. In fact you get zero refund at all. All it does is reduce your amount owed and most people after all credits they already get do not owe anywhere near $7,500.

I never owe taxes. Always get a refund. So buying a volt would net me NOTHING tax wise if all taxes / deductions remained the same as last year.

The best way to make it the most advantageous is look at your prior taxes and see what your liability has been. If similar expected next year then simply reduce your withholdings to keep more cash in your pocket each week and run up a $7,500 tab. This would allow you to deduct the entire $7,500 worth of the credit.

Agreed. The Federal works that way and I checked my taxes and I would get the whole $7500 as a credit. The California one is a rebate that has had an X amount allocated already.

Now-a-days there's political baggage with almost anything so screw it. If the Volt seems to be the best option for me, I'll just be a "revolutionary" haha.

We really enjoy our volt. Go and Drive one, and see if it seems like the right choice. It always comes back to what you want anyways.

So tired of hearing complaints on the auto bailout. I bet none of us would be driving these Camaro's had it not happened. And how many hundreds of thousands more would be unemployed.

It's done, it's over with, now live with it.
