Whoever says it doesn't matter
either doesn't work on cars or just have been lucky not to have gotten zapped yet. Disconnect the negative always or be prepared for a new hair style.

I personally just loosen everything and then take them off at the same time so I don't have to think or worry.

And disconnecting the battery suggestion should not be taken lightly, but more importantly not wearing jewelry (rings specifically) when working on equipment. A kid who worked in our shop always wore his "promise ring", I don't know how many times I told him to take it off and put it in his toolbox until the end of the day. He did not listen, until he got it between the positive battery terminal of the battery or the starter (I don't remember which) and the frame. It instantly welded itself to the point he could not move his hand out of that position, and it burned his finger pretty bad. As a result, his "promise ring" left a permanent impression in his finger. To add insult to injury, after his finger healed, he was seen wearing it again!

My vote is for removing the negative terminal first

Remove the negative terminal 1st unless a manual or instruction specifically tells you otherwise. When the negative terminal is removed the battery is isolated from energizing unless you ground the negative post to the positive post with a wrench or something to complete the circuit.
If you are removing the positive post 1st the battery is not isolated and is at greater risk to voltage spike. |

So in our Camaros keep in mind we have to remove the Neg terminal first... located in the trunk!
"Remove your stuff out of the trunk, lift the cover, there should be a big plastic handle, turn it counterclockwise, then remove the next cover, lift the foam that has the compressor installed on it and you should see the battery, remove the negative cable w/ a flathead screwdriver and set it aside." |

Always the Negative first. Remove it with a 10mm socket...

So here's an even dumber question:
When using the Camaro with jumper cables to jump someone else's car, where do you place the negative clamp in our engine bays??? I know we have the positive extension terminal in the engine bay, but where is the negative one??? Sent from my abacus using precise finger movements...... |

There's a ground post in the left front corner. It's point right at the engine.

You can attach the negative connection to any clean metal part of the car. Clean, not painted, that is.

heh you remove the negative first because you dont want to turn your wrench into a welder.
![]() Also gold in general is very conductive so its a good idea to never wear any rings, bracelets, watches, ect when working on a vehicle. And Amperage is the part that will kill you.
