I have seen this on several GM's. You need to disconnect the steering shaft from the rack. Sometimes this can be done at the base of the column in the car or at the rack outside the car. If the noise is no longer present it is probably in the rack. If its still there, It is in the column somewhere. This works most of the time, but I have been fooled before as there is no load on the column when disconnected and can change the noise. Also, DO NOT spin the wheel all the way around if disconnected. It will damage internal components. Lately, the most common cause of this has been the clockspring, which is the component that spins just under the wheel yet still allows all of the electrical connections on the steering wheel as well as the air bag connectors still make electrical connection. We have installed several of those in the past year for the steering squeek.

Lscamaro, I'll let you know after I get it done next week. Mine makes the noise after the car warms up a bit, and its every time I drive it. Started as an occasional noise about a month or so ago then gradually became all the time. If yours is doing this then I'd assume the r&p is the problem with yours. Keep ya posted.

Does anybody know what parts are involved in replacing the rack and pinion and if it can be done at home?

Well after having my car at the dealership for almost two days, I can say it feels and sounds so much better. It's like the cars brand new again. I guess it's been slowly going over time to where I almost didn't notice. Keeping my fingers crossed that it won't do it again later on. And lscamaro, I looked up the part and its a whole assembly, you can get it from gm partshouse, though I found it cheaper on rock auto.
