The good news is I already replaced the trunk release assembly that I seemed to utterly destroy during my door panel removal process. All is right with the universe again...
I can have that door panel off in 5 minutes now.. muahahah.

Thanks for the great write up and photos. They really helped in identifying the wire locations.
I had similar problems, and realized that the wires from the GOBO lights are to small to make a good connection with even the red vampire clips. T-taps or a slightly bigger tap wire to splice on to is the way to go. A common problem lately is that wires are sized to a minimum according to the current they must carry, and not for the realities of working with human hands.
