Thats why we said you need a tune with the thermostat. This would account for all these problems

160 without mods is too cold. plug in HPTuners and have the fans come on sooner and with more intensity.
did you know that there are timing table adders for temps, or even lower temps? you may risk detonation. too cold of temp also means valve springs dont work correctly, so one red line could be your last. moss magnuson act wont save you if you install a part directly related to the failure. |

With the 160 stat, coolant temps have been ranging from 172 to 184 driving around town... 30 - 45mph with several stop lights, etc. Ambient temp of 77F. Fans were set to come on sooner.

Don't do 160 it's way to cool. 180 min in this car would be my advise if you insist on changing it. Keep it stock unless you have a reason.

For what it's worth, my father has the stock thermostat in his LT1 but tuned the fans to come on wayyyy earlier and stay on longer. He did this about 2 years ago but had a manual fan switch before it and has seen a great increase in water pump life and hoses due to the lower temps and pressure in the system. He has blown a few hoses and pumps over the years (96' LT1) but has not seem any problems since. In my opinion it isn't such a bad thing for the 160 but the LS3 is a different engine so this may not even be valid but I think just a fan retune would serve you well.

most ppl in the truck world throw 160's in and bump the timing up a little along with tuning the fans to come on early.

i logged my ls1 with a 160 and it didnt like it. only had intake and corsa.
if it is only a drag car, id say yes, or even snip out the middle of it and use the perimeter to maintain the coolant flow velocity. daily driver? tweak the fans and leave the stat. get an interceptor guage and watch the kr jump all over, especially the burst knock. |
