thanks Airgoya, that is actually what i meant.
so initially, the ss would include a better engine, while the z28 maybe better features (possibly better handling also)? |

It seems like common thoughts regarding engine options are the L76 6.0L, LS3 6.2L, and either LS8, LSA, and LS9 (I don't think this is practical at all because of the exotic materials and cost.) The L76 is already in the G8 and LS3 in the 'Vette. LS8 is an alleged version of a supercharged 6.2 and the LSA is a confirmed supercharged 6.2 in the CTS-V. It seems likely, IF there is a 500-fighter, either of these two would likely get the nod' since the LSA already makes something like 550 horsepower.
My thinking is (regarding the V8 option(s)) is that the Z28 gets the LS3 and the SS get the LSA/LS8; either that, or reversed. Since GM is kinda' going back to the 1st Gen. for design inspiration, I'm guessing they may have an RS appearance package that one could add to either, or both, Z28s and SSs, just like the good 'ole days. We'll find out at Indy...

There wasn't much of a performance difference between SSs and Z28s. SSs had a little better exhaust and cold air induction through the hood. I believe they may have come from GM with better swaybar and such, but I can't recall at the moment.
Now, you could've obtained a bunch more stuff through SLP for your SS though, including catback, suspension, and a special Blackwing lid at the end of the '02 production run. You weren't talking about a big change though because most of the SLP Dual-Dual catbacks (to my understanding) had a sort of restrictor plate before the muffler to quiet it down some more. I've read many people cut those out of the catback and liked it afterward, but you may only be looking at 10-20 more horsepower over a Z28. I think the SS was more of an appearance option than performance, since the power difference wasn't much. Maybe we'll see a bigger divergence with this generation...

well nothing has been said as of yet besides a big hinting towards SS..traditionally it was z28 was a track and handling package with a smaller but potent and performance oriented 302 engine and the SS with its straightline performance, big hp and torque numbers, and bigger engines. Then they had the RS which was more or less an apperence package which could be had with the z28 and SS. Me, im hoping they go this route with the camaro.

Nothing's official, but in the 4th gen. cars the z28 had a little less horsepower than a SS. So maybe the 400+ horse engine for the z, and then for the SS something supercharged?
nobody knows though, it's all just guessing |
