Been torn on the silver or black myself. From what I read though, if you get into it, the black is the way to go.

I have the Gopro 3 blk edition. Glad I bought it. I use the suction cup on the side of my car for videos. Also, I have the Gopole for random stuff when I'm outside.

Yea, black edition is very useful. Great framerates, nice remote, and the difference between editions are noticable

I received the Hero3 black edition with remote as a gift. I bought all the mounts and the LCD screen and a nice Pelican box to store it in. Have not used it yet so come on summer.

Silver still has the remote capabilities and can use a simple smart phone app.

To the OP... Black not required, but remote capabilities on Silver as I mentioned are nice. However, with WIFI turned on these really drain battery power pretty fast.

Got the same for Xmas....My kid showed me how to get it going, have yet to do it all myself....I always heard they were a pain (older ones..??), but this one seems doable to me....No smart phone, guess I'll have to do the buttons manually, no biggie.....The website on how to use it seemed very good...

....Keeping my fingers crossed I'll be able to do it...lol....

I agree based on my limited use. One thing I did notice was that when you turn the camera off, the WiFi stayed on. I found this out the first time I stored it. I was showing someone the camera and it was dead. It was charged when I stored it. So I charged it again and when I shut it off I noticed the WiFi light was still blinking. I will look to see if there is a setting to turn both off at the same time.

Check to see if it's still connected to your smart phone, as long as your smart phones wifi is on it will stay connected to it. Anyhow you still need to turn the wifi on the camera off separately from the camera power. Just turn off your smart phone wifi first. That's the only way I could get mine to stop leaving the camera wifi on.

I did the same thing. It's like that so you can turn it on/off using the remote. You'll have to push the button to turn on/off WIFI.

If you want to extend battery life while recording turn it off and don't use WIFI. I can't even get 1hr of recording with WIFI on.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I ended up going with AngryBird's old GoPro. I really wanted a newer one because I heard the earlier ones can be a pain, but I'm sure I will still enjoy it, and it's better to be able to document something, than nothing at all.

Glad I could help. You should have it Saturday, Monday at the latest.
