I've had my Elite Engineering Catch-Can on my 2010 RS for over three years - it pulls about a 1/4 cup of oil every 3 months - highly recommended.

Their breather is just that; a breather. A breather is not the best option as it allows metered to escape and un-metered air in which can cause lean and rich issues. This system allows the factory designed function at normal operation and also separates and oil that can be drawn back through the system at WOT to prevent oil in the intake system. All in all this is really a more affordable design of the 1LE separator.

Any "Empty" can (like most of the inexpensive brands available) will catch some oil, but unless it has a design that will catch all, or nearly all, a good amount will still pass right through. The Elite clean-side separator if you remove the top, you will see a chamber with coalescing media in it that will catch all, or nearly all of the oil and allow it to return to the valve cover after flow direction is again entering. It is only at WOT when intake manifold vacuum is non-existant that the flow reverts through the clean-side and draws oil with it. So size in this case, "doesn't' matter". The empty OEM canisters cannot stop all the oil, it is a very simple unit that slows the ingestion. So no, the Elite unit is far more effective as it directs all vapors through the media where it is trapped and then returned to the valve cover. |
