Best way to avoid bad routes from OnStar? Don't call them for nav advice.
 Seriously, if it's anything over 75 miles I use a combination of google maps and my phone, with the address in my in-car navigation just so it can recalculate around traffic and checks and balances. I found out the hard way when I went out to Chicago for school from the Irvine area. |

154 is actually faster by about 15 to 20 minuets than 101 is unless you get struck behind a tour bus or simi, And very few simi's use 154 that late at night unless they have a delivery to make. And tour buses are mostly during the day, I would have taken 154 in a heart beat if I was in my Camaro..

You can call OnStar and tell them to redirect you on the route you'd rather travel. I have done this before.

Yes there is a way, get rid of the directions package and with the money you save get yourself a good GPS.

MapQuest says Rte 154 is 12 miles shorter and 5 minutes faster. That's the way I'd go.

As a Santa Barara native, I highly suggest the mountain route ei-154. When I was a teenager I used to take my car up there all the time......such a blast, and gorgeous scenery/views. Or take the 101 for a nice coastal drive. I havent been to SB in ten years, but I am planning on a road trip soon .....gonna have the top down all the way.
As for navigation units, I have a nice Garmin Nuvi the is perfect, I like having a separate stand alone unit such as this one

When I used onstar, I hit the button and spoke with a rep. So you can tell them to give you a different route...

OnStar calculates the best route from your current location. If you’d like to change your route preference settings, just push your blue button and speak to an Advisor who can help change that for you. You also have the option of storing up to five routes in your eNav system. I hope this helps! Joshua a two lane, unlit mountain road should not have preference over a 4 lane highway as the default setting.
