MyAFibStory.com 400

JOLIET, Ill. – The Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup kicked off Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway with the MyAFibStory.com 400. Team Penske Ford driver Brad Keselowski scored the win and Team Flowmaster Drivers took eight of the top ten spots.

Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon and Jamie McMurray dominated the early portion of the race while Kevin Harvick and Kyle Larson set the pace in the late going. All five are Team Flowmaster Drivers.

Keselowski started 25th and was in the lead battle during the second half of the race as well; but it was a move with 16 laps remaining that set him up for the win. Harvick and Larson were in a side-by-side battle for the lead when Keselowski got a run on the duo and drove between them for the top spot.

“I’m really not sure what to say,” said Keselowski of the move after the win. “I don’t really know what happened. There was traffic and I was just digging and in the zone. I knew from the start we would be good, but man it was really awesome the last few runs.”

The win gives Keselowski an automatic bid into the Challenger Round (the second three-race round) of the Chase that begins at Kansas Speedway on October 5. It was his second consecutive victory and fifth of the season.

Gordon and Larson finished second and third. Joey Logano finished in the fourth spot with Harvick fifth.

Flowmaster is the Exclusive Performance Exhaust of NASCAR and many of the top teams in the sport have the company’s decal on the side of their car. Team Flowmaster Drivers have won 19 of the 27 races this season as well as the Sprint Unlimited and the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race.

It looks like the Richard Childress, Penske, and Michael Waltrip teams are the only big name teams that don't use Flowmaster. Interesting.

Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway

LOUDON, N.H. – Joey Logano punched his ticket to the “Contenders Round” of the 2014 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup on Sunday with victory in the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. While he celebrated, Team Flowmaster Drivers took the rest of the top-five spots.

Logano joins Penske Racing teammate Brad Keselowski (Chicagoland winner) as the two drivers locked into the second round of the 2014 Chase that begins on Oct. 5 at Kansas Speedway. A four-tire pit stop 56 laps from the end buried Logano in the field; but fresher tires, savvy driving and a rash of cautions late in the race gave him the shot he needed.

“Todd (Gordon, crew chief) put four tires on it and at this point I thought he was crazy because we came out 16th,” said Logano. “I was like, ‘well, let’s just try to salvage something out of this’. Before I knew it I was sitting third.

“Todd gave me a really good car that I can be aggressive with on restarts,” said Logano on a restart with 30 laps remaining that gave him the lead. “We’ve seen it time and time again with these Sprint Cup races that it’s most likely going to come down to a late-race caution, so you’ve got to be able to execute the restart and the first five laps around traffic.”

Logano negotiated the final laps flawless and rolled to his fourth win of the season.

Team Flowmaster Driver and rookie of the year candidate Kyle Larson backed up his third-place run last week at Chicago with a runner-up finish Sunday. Kevin Harvick, Jamie McMurray and Jimmie Johnson completed the top five.

Flowmaster is the Exclusive Performance Exhaust of NASCAR and many of the top teams in the sport have the company’s decal on the side of their car. Team Flowmaster Drivers have won 19 of the 28 races this season as well as the Sprint Unlimited and the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race. Fourteen of the 16 drivers in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup are Team Flowmaster Drivers.

Top-10 Finishers:

1. Joey Logano
2. Kyle Larson**
3. Kevin Harvick**
4. Jamie McMurray**
5. Jimmie Johnson**
6. Aric Almirola**
7. Brad Keselowski
8. Kyle Busch**

Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway

Kansas City, Kan. – Joey Logano punched his ticket into the Eliminator Round of the 2014 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup winning Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway. While Logano celebrated, some of the biggest names in the sport left Kansas facing potential elimination.

It was Logano’s career-high fifth win of the season and second in the Chase. The race was the first race of the three-race Contender Round with the winner earning the automatic berth to the next round. Logano dominated the second-half of the race, leading 122 of the final 144 laps.

“Beginning of the race, we were okay,” said Logano. “The car was a little loose, once the top lane (of the track) rubbered in, the car came to life and we tuned the car to the top after that and were able to plug along pretty good up there.”

In general as more rubber gets down into various racing grooves they can become more usable for different drivers and that’s what happened Sunday for Logano.

“We came in to here thinking we need a solid finish; we can’t win the championship today, but we can definitely lose it,” said Logano.

And with Logano moving on, many of the top teams in the sport suffered terrible results at Kansas:

-Jimmie Johnson had an early race crash that resulted in a 40th-place finish.
-Dale Earnhardt Jr. had a tire failure that sent him into the wall and a 39th-place finish.
-Logano’s teammate Brad Keselowski also suffered a tire failure and crash, resulting in a 36th place finish.

Entering the upcoming race at Charlotte, they are the bottom-three drivers in the Contender Round. The bottom four in points, providing none of them win in the next two races, will be eliminated following next week’s race at Talladega.

On Sunday, Team Flowmaster Driver and rookie of the year contender Kyle Larson finished second, third was Kyle Busch with Martin Truex Jr. and Carl Edwards completing the top five.

Flowmaster is the Exclusive Performance Exhaust of NASCAR and many of the top teams in the sport have the company’s decal on the side of their car. Team Flowmaster Drivers have won 20 of the 30 races this season as well as the Sprint Unlimited and the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race.

Bank Of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway

Charlotte, N.C. - Team Flowmaster Driver Kevin Harvick drove his Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet SS to the win Saturday night Bank Of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The victory gives Harvick a berth into the Eliminator Round (final 8 drivers) for the 2014 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

“Everybody on our team just continues to build better race cars,” said Harvick after his first win since the Southern 500 at Darlington in April. His cars have been fast, leading the most laps in six races, but they have struggled getting victories.

“We know that we’ve had the cars to run up front and lead laps,” continued Harvick. “Things just haven’t gone right and we’ve made some mistakes; things haven’t gone right more than not. So, I’m really proud of all the guys on this team.”

Harvick again led the most laps, 162 of 334, and took the lead for the final time 17 laps from the end. He did survive a late caution and restart to score his 26th career-victory and third of the season.

Team Flowmaster Drivers Jeff Gordon and Jamie McMurray finished second and third. Joey Logano was fourth with Kyle Busch scoring a fifth-place finish.

The Chase intensity boiled over following the race when Brad Keselowski, Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth all had “cool-down-lap” crashes. Kenseth and Keselowski scuffled briefly in the garage area. Four drivers will be eliminated from Championship contention following Sunday’s race at Talladega Superspeedway.

Flowmaster is the Exclusive Performance Exhaust of NASCAR and many of the top teams in the sport have the company’s decal on the side of their car. Team Flowmaster Drivers have won 21 of the 31 races this season as well as the Sprint Unlimited and the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race.

That was pretty surprising. I hope that the monetary penalties that were handed down for the inside-of-the-car actions will stress the importance of driver and pit crew safety out on the track.

Geico 500 at Talladega Superspeedway

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Brad Keselowski wheeled his Ford Fusion to a thrilling clutch victory Sunday in the Geico 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. It was his sixth win of the season and took him from outside the Championship field back into the Eliminator Round of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

Six Team Flowmaster Drivers advanced following Talladega to the three-race Eliminator Round that begins Sunday at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway. Those drivers are: Kevin Harvick, Ryan Newman, Denny Hamlin, Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards and Jeff Gordon.

At Talladega, Keselowski was masterful on the final lap holding the top spot, knowing a win was his only chance to advance in the Chase.

“Talladega is such a wild card and to be able to win here you have to catch breaks and make your own breaks,” said Keselowski of his third Talladega victory. “This race is the scariest of the three in the bracket. To be able to win here is really a privilege, it really is.”

Keselowski overcame damage on his car in a lap 60 crash and was able to get the best on the field in a second “overtime” green-white-checked portion of the race to get the win.

“We just persevered,” Keselowski said. “We didn’t give up.”

Keselowski scored the win with Matt Kenseth second and Clint Bowyer third. Team Flowmaster Driver Landon Cassill scored his career-best finish of fourth with Ryan Newman completing the top five.

Flowmaster is the Exclusive Performance Exhaust of NASCAR and many of the top teams in the sport have the company’s decal on the side of their cars. Team Flowmaster Drivers have won 21 of the 32 races this season as well as the Sprint Unlimited and the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race.

I am not a fan at all of Brad. Maybe when he matures more, I may, but not for now. I was looking forward to him NOT making the next elimination round. Apparently Matt could not hear me cheering from the couch, I need his radio channel to speak with him next week. LOL.

Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500 at Martinsville Speedway

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Team Flowmaster Driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. drove to the popular win Sunday after some frenzied final laps in the Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500 at historic Martinsville Speedway. It was his first win at the track, and fourth of the season.

Earnhardt was in contention most of the race, but a late race caution and pit stop left him fifth on a restart with five laps remaining. He was the first car in the preferred inside line with fresh tires, as other drivers stayed on the track with worn tires in front of him.

Earnhardt pounced on the green flag and was in second by turn three tracking down leader Tony Stewart.

“As soon as I got clear of everyone buy Tony, I remember going into turn three and seeing him struggle,” said Earnhardt. “I thought, I got to get by him really fast because he’s going to hold me up.

“I really wasn’t under Tony, but I think he knew that the position was lost and he’d give me the inside going into three. As soon as we got in the center corner; I gassed it, ‘doored’ him pretty hard. But I had to go.”

Earnhardt got the lead and was able to keep a few car lengths between himself and teammate Jeff Gordon at the end of the win. It was his 23rd-career victory.

Team Flowmaster Drivers took the next three spots with Gordon, Ryan Newman and Tony Stewart matching his best finish of the season with a fourth. Joey Logano was fifth.

Sunday was the first round in the three-race Eliminator Round in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Jeff Gordon was the top-finishing Eliminator Eight driver and leads the points. A race win at Texas or Phoenix in the next two weeks for any of the eight drivers is a berth in the Championship Round in three weeks, the balance of the four-driver round will be made of top point getters.

Flowmaster is the Exclusive Performance Exhaust of NASCAR and many of the top teams in the sport have the company’s decal on the side of their cars. Team Flowmaster Drivers have won 22 of the 33 races this season as well as the Sprint Unlimited and the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race.

Team Flowmaster Driver Ryan Newman Making His Mark With Consistency

Fort Worth, Tex. – While much of the emphasis in 2014 has been on the importance of winning NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races, there is still the very critical element of the point standings. Team Flowmaster Driver Ryan Newman is making that work for his team.

While Newman is winless this season, he is second in the standings and in a spot -- as it stands now -- to make it into the Championship Round of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup on November 16 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Newman has been the model of consistency all year and most importantly in the Chase. In the Challengers Round he averages a finish just above 10th with finishes of 15th, 18th and 8th. In the second round, the Contenders Round, he averaged a sixth-place finish with 6th, 7th and 5th-place finishes. And, he launched strong in this Eliminator Round with a third-place finish at Martinsville.

Newman rolls into Sunday’s AAA Texas 500 with momentum on his side aiming for a second Texas victory; he won here back in 2003.

2014 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Standings:

1. Jeff Gordon, 4,044**
2. Ryan Newman, 4,041**
3. Joey Logano, 4,040
4. Matt Kenseth, 4,039**
5. Denny Hamlin, 4,037**
6. Carl Edwards, 4,024**
7. Brad Keselowski, 4,013
8. Kevin Harvick, 4,011**
